[edit] Location
The Glonn valley is surrounded by woods and hills, carved by the former Inn glacier. To the south, the Alps are clearly visible on the horizon.
The rivers of Glonn, Kupferbach and Schrannenbach spring from Glonn realm. The lake Kastensee is part of the villages area, just in the neighbourhood to Moosach the lake Steinsee is found.
[edit] History
Some findings of weapons and decorations are evidences of an early occupation at Neolithic Period (new stone age). The villages name could be derived from the celtic word „Glana“ - the clear (river).
In a document signed by the bishop of Freising the name „Glan“ appears in the year 774. This is taken as the earliest proof for civilization. From the time around 1015 a local dynasty „da Glana“ is known, in the year 1349 the church St. Johann zu Glan is mentioned in the building register Monumenta Boica.
The name changed during the 16th century to „Glon“ and finally to the nowadays used „Glonn“.
In 1632, Glonn was burned down during the Thirty Years' War by the swedish army. The rebuilding took almost centuries, the new church was not finished until 1823.
Since 1901, Glonn got the right to hold own markets. 1908 the first house got electricity, generated by water power in some of the local mills, thus up to 50% of the houses were already electrified by 1914.
After World War II Glonn was a refugee destination, which grew to more than a third of the population. A lot of houses have to be build, 1959 it was decided to create street names, because the simple numbering of houses wasn't sufficient any more.
The village changed from an agricultural dominated area to a modern center for the surrounding places, with handcraft shops and trading. Farming has decreased.
[edit] Coat of Arms
The Coat of Arms shows a mill wheel on silver ground, above a natural trout swimming to the right.
Mill wheel and trout point to the water rich area and the former seven corn mills, which were an important economic factor.
[edit] Sister city
With the french village Bonnefamille, contact was established in 1998 and lead to alternating visits of clubs and delegations.
[edit] Buildings
The Castle of Zinneberg overlooks Glonn from its outstanding post (today a bit hidden behind a row of trees). Most probably its history reaches back to the 11th century, but sources are not clear here. In 1332 it was documented as a gift to the house of Preysing, in the following it was in the hands of some famous families: the houses of Pienzenau, Fugger, von Arco, Pallavicini, Scanzoni, von Lichtenfels and Büssing-Orville. In the year 1927 it was bought by the "Sisters of our good herdsman" (Schwestern vom guten Hirten), who lead it today as a residential school for girls from difficult social origins.
The church Pfarrkirche St. Johann Baptist (name originating from St. John, the Baptist) is a prominent building in the center, after the destruction of the old church it was rebuilt since 1768 and finished in 1823. The buildings style is Rokoko, containing figurines and a cruzifix made by artist Joseph Götsch (an Ignaz Günther scholar). 1994 an extensive refurbishment took place.
A central building is the former monastry school Klosterschule, built from 1899 to 1902. It then contained a girls school driven by religious order Maria Stern from Augsburg. Mid of the 1970ies the meanwhile abandoned building was sold to the village and changed to a cultural and social center. The attic floor now contains the museum of local history, a meeting point for the elderly provides social contact in the „Altenstube“, the local branch of Red Cross and a day nursery found their place there. In the cellar a youth club was established. From time to time the old class rooms were even used by the nearby public school until there was enough place. The old chapel with sacristy is used as gallery for several art exhibitions, the township offers it even as an atmospheric alternative for civil marriage. The nearby monastry garden with its well is public accessible and provides a nice point of rest.
[edit] Culture
Every autumn, members of the local traditional club Trachtenverein Glonn present a play in original bavarian dialect.
The museum of local history (volunteer, open on several days in the year) allows a view on ancient artefacts, paintings and books of local artists. A room shows the sleeping chamber of famous local authoress Lena Christ (1881-1920).
The technical monument Stegmühle Glonn holds the original electrical pump mill from 1906, which generated electricity up to the late 1990ies. Despite more than 100 years old, it still is in fully functional condition.
[edit] Activities
Since 1901 the market sunday takes place four times a year. Additionally, there is a christmas market on second advent sunday and a farmer's market on every second saturday during May to October.
On a saturday evening in July visitors of the nighttime fleamarket (Nachtflohmarkt) fill the main street, romantically illuminated by candles and lanterns.
The Fun Weekend with mountainbike and inline skating tournaments is organized by a local sports club in July.
The Glonner Dorffest is wellknown beyond the villages boundaries. Organized by the larger local clubs since 1992, every year over the first weekend of the bavarian summer school holidays, it provides a high time with beer and local specialities. The temporary huts give shelter from rain, so nothing can disturb the jamboree - however, the visitors prefer to enjoy the sunny weather and fill the open air beer garden, so be sure to come early.
