IMDb profile |
Global Village is an Australian television show broadcast by the Australian public broadcaster SBS. Since time immemorial the programm has been hosted by Silvio Rivier, who also does many of the voice overs.
Global Village takes its viewers to the far corners of the globe where they will discover that the world really is an amazing place (an advertising slogan of SBS). The show has featured over 160 countries and travelled over four million kilometres (another SBS advertising blurb).
The show consists of usually two, cheaply purchased, brief, mostly 10-15 minute long lightly digestible, short films describing land and people of foreign places. About 50% come frome a French tv station and thus deal with topics from France, or, less frequently, its former colonies. Thus critics often say that the may well have travelled over four million kilometres, but ended up once more on the banks of a canal in France.
As the web site explains, the main focus is to educate viewers about different cultures and working styles from around the world. Global Village has released two music CDs which contain a selection of music taken from the countries they visit.
