[edit] Summary

A glider instrument panel installed in the front seat position of a Schempp-Hirth Janus-C (there is a separate panel in the rear seat posioton). From top, left to right: yaw string (red yarn), magnetic compass (above glare shield), air vent control knob, airspeed indicator, electric turn and bank indicator, sensitive altimeter, stopwatch, pneumatic switches, Ilec SN-10 glider flight computer (coupled to GPS receiver not visible), analog variometer displays (connected to computer), Rocky Mountain Instruments MicroEncoder (with digital ASI, Alt, OAT, and VSI display), MicroAir airband two-way radio. The control stick mounted wheel-brake handle is visible at the bottom center between the pilot's legs. The image was taken by the pilot while in flight, so the instruments are showing typical indications, and the yaw string and slip skid ball show a slight side slip.

The indications on the computer are as follows:

  • Left side
    • << 175  : Bearing to waypoint and course deviation indicator
    • 194 at 54 : Ground track and speed (knots)
    • Brookhv  : Selected waypoint abbreviation
    • Out 10.2  : Distance to waypoint (km)
    • Left  : Course deviation (left of direct course line)
    • +++1319  : Height above glide slope to waypoint

  • Right side
    • NAv -1.2 : Netto 20 second average (rate of climb less glider sink rate)
    • MC 2.0 : MacCready speed to fly setting 2.0 knots
    • Alt3443  : Altitude in feet
    • Wind  : Wind computation from GPS ground track and true airspeed
    • 252 at 15 : Wind direction and speed (knots) with wind sock display
    • 254 at 15 : Wind entered by pilot for glide computations

The center column has a speed to fly director, with one arrow down showing the stick should be pushed to increase airspeed.
