Sid Haig Page Copyright

Your wish has been granted. Check the fine red print on the bio page now (we've licensed the bio to this site as of today), and kindly revert his page here to the swanky one I had set up 2 days ago. Let me know when this is done. Thanks. Spirot 05:41, 13 November 2006 (UTC) PS - Whomever did that nice box around his headshot with his stats was evidently on our side. LOL! Please keep that as is if you can do the revert without erasing that. Thanks! Spirot 05:44, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Sid's Page

Many thanks, Glen! Knew it would work out in the end! =) Spirot 06:04, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

quick question...

For Sid's page, I would like to add his Filmography which is, in its most recently updated incarnation, on the MySpace page I run for him. Do I have to put a little licensing statement on there, too, to post the creds here? Just want to save myself from any possible aggravation, as his page would definitely benefit from having that info on there. Thanks! Spirot 06:47, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! Now I have my project for tomorrow all lined up! =) Spirot 06:51, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Question about username blocks

Hi, newbie admin here: I just happened to see one of your latest blocks here: "1:05, 13 November 2006, Glen S (Talk) blocked Сергій Ласкавий (contribs) (infinite, account creation blocked, autoblock disabled) (Unblock) (Please read our our username policy and choose another name)"

Just wondering: when we block for {username}, wouldn't we normally leave "account creation" open? after all, we're even asking them explicitly to create another account. Fut.Perf. 12:17, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for the explanation. Weird. Fut.Perf. 12:22, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Template question

Good evening. You recently added a template to User talk:24.141.129.69. Could you please drop me a note with the link to the template itself? Thanks. Rossami (talk) 06:24, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm not going to tell you off but there are some things about them that are non-standard and that I'd like to ask you to consider.
  1. You may have noticed that most of our standard templates have a hidden comment at the end. It's usually in the form of <!-- Template:name (use) -->. Because warning-templates are usually substituted in, the comment serves to show other users where to find the template. This lets experienced editors find and fix templates which are broken or vandalized and helps new users find them and start to use them as well. The hidden comments that I noticed on yours still appear to hold the old tags from the templates that I think you copied.
  2. Your templates are centered. The general rule is that templates placed at the top of the page get centered but the templates used in succession and lower on the vandal's page (like "don't blank any more articles or you'll get blocked) are generally left-justified. Remember that not all editors use the templates. Some type their vandalism warnings by hand. Too much switching back and forth from centered to left-justified is hard to read.
  3. Your images are a bit larger than standard. The general trend is that the earlier, politer warnings don't get images, the mid-range warnings get small images and the "you've been blocked" warnings get the stern images. If I remember right, they usually cap out at 30px but that standard may have changed. When mixed in with the standard sizes, such changing sizes of images also can make the page harder to follow for subsequent editors who are trying to decide if (or for how long) a block is appropriate.
  4. The yellow on your Vandalism template is, well, I'm trying to say this politely... garish? It's very bright. But I don't know that the brightness will make it more effective. Again, my concern is that it makes a page with mixed warnings harder to read.
Other than the hidden template names (and maybe the centering), don't change anything yet. But once you've had a chance to use them on pages where other people are also using warning templates, please set aside some time to go back and see if the mixing of formats affects the usability of the page. Thanks.
And thank you very much for your efforts on the vandalism patrol. It's thankless work but very necessary for the project. Rossami (talk) 06:56, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

WP admin

Hi Glen, whilst browsing through rather obscure discussion topics, I noticed that you offered Professor Sunderland some coaching on what to do to consider being made a WP admin. I was wondering if you'd be prepared to do the same for me? For example, what else should I be doing apart from editing articles, participating in move/delete discussions, reverting vandalism, etc? And at what point do you think my edit count would be high enough for people to start considering me? For reference, I've been editing since January 2005, and have an edit count of nearly 4000. Thanks! robwingfield «TC» 00:05, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Many thanks for the welcome

Just getting my head around some of the formatting things; most of the bio stubs that I've started up have been fairly content-heavy, and could probably include headings so that the articles are easier to follow.

Request for adminship

CSD R1's

I'm just as confused about the whole thing as you are. They're showing up to me as blue links in Special:BrokenRedirects. The 20-30 redirects that I was mainly tagging were all pointing to Abderrahim Goumri, which was probably deleted. However, the deletion log is empty and the discussion page doesn't exist (and doesn't have a deletion log either).

Wizardry Dragon seems to think that they were removed by an oversighted admin. We're just as confused as you are, but I had an admin buddy, Eagle 101, check into it and he can't see them either. It's my understanding that only Senior Bureaucrats can do this and only can they themselves see these deletions, even then only in the oversight logs. Perhaps you can shed some light on the matter? thadius856talk 02:54, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Please Protect San Francisco, California page

Yes, I know it violates the rule not to protect featured articles. I'd like to invoke WP:IAR and plead that the page be semi-protected.

The San Francisco, California page, today's featured article, is being attacked constantly, and it is not being reverted quickly enough. One of the many instances that the page was replaced with a homophobic vulgarity did not get reverted for seven minutes.

Please help. Please override the "official" guideline.--DaveOinSF 18:54, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Would mind tell me what is going on Glen? Where have I been listed this time?
These BKWSU followers, such as Riveros11, 72.91.4.91, searchin man, Bksimonb and Jesselp, are using every trick in the book to stop anyone else contributing to the article on the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University. Main Page FA Protection

Hi Glen, I hope you don't think that those of us who are trying to enforce the Main Page FA non-protection are trying to blindly assume that it should never be protected and that we should let vandalism keep going for others to clean up. Looking at San Fransisco, Claifornia, your protection was more than valid under the policy, as were subsequent protections. But equally, when I unprotected it at 12, after 4 hours of protection, there was no siginificant vandalism till that evening, when the kill faggots vandal moved in for the night. That was - I'm sure you'll have noted - an unusually high amount of vandalism and one that the policy allows semi-protection for. --Robdurbar 11:24, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the Strong Support (and the intention of a co-nom)

I'd like to express my huge thanks to you, Glen, for your strong support in my recent RfA, which closed with 100% support at 71/0/1. In regards to your earlier warning about vandalism. No-one here has made any edits.

However, we are on a dynamic IP. Which may have been the last bigpond user to lease our IP. A quick check of a Telstra IP will reveal whether it is static or dynamic via the host name.

Hopefully this will help you in future wikipedia "crime fighting".

Is your idea of "vanadalism prevention" reverting random edits by non-users so you can look like you're preventing vandalism in front of other administrators when in fact your just reverting random things without knowing if they are true or false.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.89.165.90 (talkcontribs) November 21, 2006.

How can I fix the problem? I went to my monobook, but nothing happen. I cleared my cache, etc. Absolutely no change.

Actually, scratch that. It happens in Firefox only for some reason. It works fine in IE. Should I just wait or something? Is it a browser probelm? Nishkid64 23:05, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Image:WikiThanks.png Hi, I hit 10,000 edits the other day and to commemorate this momentous (?) occasion, I wanted to leave a note to the various people I've run into on Wikipedia that have made an impact on my time here. I know that our direct contact with each other was me being rather stubborn about you giving me a friendly reminder. It did get me thinking and I appreciate it. I've often seen your name as the blocking admin for vandals I've reported and I just wanted to thank you for all the work you do around here. =) -- Gogo Dodo 01:16, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Richards

I would argue that the line Audience members laughed throughout the seven-minute segment, which contained several awkward pauses.. is hardly OR or irrelevant (though I might swap the word "awkward" for "drawn-out"). It's a simple description of what happened, I don't even get into the nitty gritty (Seinfeld scolding the laughter, etc.) The article should inform the curious, and that does it's job - every news account of the incident mentions this. I think it deserves to be placed back in the article. --LeCorrector 05:08, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Any reason I can't db-nonsense a category?

Category:Men without hats -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 05:45, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

And Category:Men with hats. I've just been told that they have to go through CfD, which seems like a huge waste of time for obvious drive-by nonsense. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 06:03, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

I was told through an edit summary here that I couldn't db-nonsense it. Or maybe he was saying it was too late to db-nonsense it because someone had already added it to CfD? I just went back and read WP:SPEEDY and I see nothing in there that says I can't db-nonsense a category. I'm a bit confused about the rules here. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 06:39, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for passing that on to User talk:RobJ1981; I was just about to ask if you'd mind doing that. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 06:49, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

I went ahead and passed your words of wisdom on to User talk:Kinu (who added the category to CfD). -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 07:18, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Why am I being warned for vandalism?

I would like to contest your judgment in accusing me of vandalising pages (Sons of Butcher). I did no such thing, instead I made it into a disambiguation page since there are three separate things that Sons of Butcher could refer to, and I changed it to three more convenient articles since the original was cumbersome and disorganised.. I would like you to change this unfounded accusation of vandalism on my part please. PsychoJosh 09:31, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

NPWatcher

Hi Glen - for now, it only tags pages, but I'm thinking of putting a seperate admin interface into it pretty soon (hopefully!) - feel free to test it if you wish to (in its current form, with the standard delete interface); you'll just need to add yourself to the approved page (which is protected).. Thanks :) Martinp23 19:08, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Yay! I've got it working for admins now. I'm going to upload it, and approve you, so the boilerplate message is below. Can I ask that you check after each deletion? It's just that things could go wrong with it, and it doesn't delete talk pages automatically. It should refresh automatically to the deleted page, so if you'd do a quick check, I'd be really grateful. At some point, I'll connect it up to WP:CSD in a seperate tab, to (hopefully) help clear the ever-present backlogs :) Martinp23 20:27, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
You've been approved to use NPWatcher. When you log into the program, wait a few seconds while it queries wikipedia before screaming at your PC for crashing (unless you see an error, of course). Please give me any feature requests, bugs, etc. The watchlist feature does not work. Before you run the program, please check the changelog on the application page to see if I've made a new release. Finally, enjoy! Martinp23

WIKISKY.ORG deleted?

Why the link to www.wikisky.org was deleted? It's not a commersial resource, absolutly unique map combined with SDSS. What's wrong?

Could you please explain your reasons for removing the wikisky.org links from a large number of astronomy-related articles? Was it spam? I just want to understand your motivation. George J. Bendo 22:29, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
As a general rule, the rapid addition of links to dozens of articles is almost always spam. But from a quick review of those links, they seem to be relevant and interesting, and the site itself appears to be non-commercial. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 22:38, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi there, yes essentially I reverted as spam. The IP came up as a spam alert in the IRC channel #wikipedia-spam, as having added over 40 external links to articles (and these were their only edits ever). So I posted a spam warning telling them to stop or they'd be blocked for spamming. I came back an hour later and they'd just continued, ignored the warning and not tried to contact me. By that stage we were up to 60 links with no discussion at all (with myself nor on the talk pages), the IP was blocked for a day and all edits reverted. Hope this helps? Glen 22:46, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Is there a way to return all these links back? I am one of the authors of www.wikisky.com and that was me who added all these links. I just can't spend another 3hs to do it again. Regards, K. Lysenko.

Why you just didnt go to the site and check out that its not spam. I just didn't know how to check out messages or warnings, so I had no idea that you are sending anything to me. I am not really very experiensed wikipedia user. Sorry. But now when you are sure that it's not spam, can you please return all these links back? You also can contact me personally if you want - the phone # is in contacts on the site. Thanks, K. Lysenko.

Okay, all back. :) Glen 23:02, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot!!! K.L.

Thank you for the explanation on why these links were originally deleted. As an additional comment, I would like to note that the links are useful. The wikisky.org webpage contains data from the Sloan Digitized Sky Survey, a major astronomical sky survey. Because the data from the survey are only free for non-commercial use, they cannot be placed on Wikipedia. Links to the images on another website were a useful alternative. (Also note that I have nothing to do with the wikisky.org website or the SDSS.) GJBendo 06:35, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

I am now beginning to worry about the actions of Kostya30 and Friendlystar. They apparently want to link every article on astronomical objects to wikisky.org using the various infobox templates in the objects' articles. Both the users appear to have a vested interest in wikisky.org, and I worry that their actions are too self-promotional. A discussion on their actions has been proceeding on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Astronomical objects. Would you please look over the issue and moderate or take action as you feel is appropriate? If you feel that no administrative action is warranted, could you please inform me. Thank you, Dr. Submillimeter 20:53, 24 November 2006 (UTC) (note the name change)

For your information, I have posted a notice on this issue on the Administrators' noticeboard. I would still appreciate your assistance and insights on this issue. Dr. Submillimeter 09:23, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

User blanking legit warnings on talk page

Hey Glen, can you please keep an eye on BGC? This user seems to believe that only admins can give warnings [3], and continually removes legitimate warnings from his/her talk page. I warned the user about removing material from Greatest Hits (Guns N' Roses album) without a reason, which was promptly blanked. The user has also already been blocked a number of times for 3RR violations - warnings which have also been removed but not archived. Thanks. Yankees76 14:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Removed entry due to copyright - how to cite/reference a source.

Hi, I wonder if you could help. I'm still pretty new to this Wikipedia stuff. I tried to add a page for a band called Spotlight Kid the other day. I copied the text off their MySpace page. Because I did that the entry I created got removed due to copyright reasons.

From what I read on here I believe it's ok to copy text as long as you cite/reference the originating site. I just want to know how I go about doing that. What format/tags etc.?

Cheers, Ollie

IP warning

Hi GlenS. I noted the warning you gave to User:84.246.54.3. It seems you start of with a {{test4}} , yet it seems to be the users very first edit. Would you agree a {{test1|History of erotic depictions}} would have been more appropriate? Sander123 12:35, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Actually no, I completely disagree. {{test1}} is used in circumstances where a user perhaps added "poop" or "I waz here" or some such test edit. I felt their edit here was abusive and entirely unnacceptable, and as such gave a {{test4im}} warning, which is used in cases of obvious vandalism. Is there a circumstance where you feel {{test4im}} is better used? Glen 12:42, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I agree with you that we're well beyond the poop category here. And you have certainly stopped this user right in its tracks. He'll probably won't do it again. Chances are he'll never return either though.
I don't like the pulled punches of these lower level templates either but they are a bit more friendly and increase the chance of getting something useful out of them. If you have a real vandal you'll quickly get a chance to hand out those final warnings. In my experience most of the vandals stop after their first warning.
I use {{test4im}} only for very grave situations, when the user had multiple blocks and had other warnings that same day. In this case I would probably have used first a test3 and then a test4. If both happened within 24 hours, and there was further evident vandalism I'd report the user.
Finally, especially since this is an ip account, I would add the page where this occurs: like this {{test4im|History of erotic depictions}}. Not everybody who reads your warning may know how to discover what is the problem it. Sander123 13:12, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
(see my talk for your replay) Hi Glen, I usually do that actually, but I forget it sometimes. From my last 3 templates 2 were substituted. I'll pay more attention to it in future, thanks. Sander123 13:31, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Glen, Thanks for clearing up the stuff to do with copyright.

Notability

Hey there, sorry for delay in my reply. You need to read WP:BAND - Specifically the Criteria for musicians and ensembles - at least ONE of those needs to be met for the band to meet policy. And, if you feel this is the case, then it must be clearly shown in the article itself (the editors shouldnt have to hunt for it). Good luck, msg me if I can help more Glen 17:11, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok, it looks like the page has been removed now. I've read the guidlines in the Notabilty article. The band I created the page for definitely meets the guidlines. I'm just a little unsure of what I need to do to stop the page being deleted.

For example, one of the points in the above article states: Contains at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable; note that it is often most appropriate to use redirects in place of articles on side projects, early bands and such.

This is true for the band I created the page for. I did state that the members were/are part of another band. Does it need to be in a particular format or something...?

Sorry for being dull! :-) Cheers, Ollie --Olliemorr 17:31, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi again, I just want to clear something up. So when it comes to Notetabilty, is it just a matter of stating one or more of the required items? Does it have to be written in any particular format so that it's clear for the people checking newly added articles?

I genuinely don't think the articles I've tried to put "disputed" tags on are fair, and I've explained why on the talk pages. Highfructosecornsyrup 01:52, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Harrassment?

I am not sure how to report harrassment but User:Mr Bullockx has placed several ridiculous tags on Doll Graveyard and has begun to hassle me over it. -WarthogDemon 03:49, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I thought Doll Graveyard was properly sourced. >_> If it's not, how can I make it sourced? -WarthogDemon 03:56, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Newbie

Just out of curiosity, how old does a user have to be (in your opinion) to not be a newcomer any more? Go Futurama! User:Sp3000 09:16, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

yourguidetoindia.com

i just wanted to point out that yourguidetoindia.com is a non commercial site with creativecommons.org tag which permits Reproduction Distribution DerivativeWorks And the tourism guide has more information on udaipur , jaipur etc then the other tourism links which are being pointed why was this removed ? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 60.254.65.177 (talkcontribs) 09:31, 3 December 2006 (UTC).

Scientology 0-8: The Book of Basics

User:Highfructosecornsyrup has slapped a big copyright tag on this, claiming that "This article consists of little else but long excerpts from each section of the book, going beyond fair use.". This is suprising, seeing as each excerpt is a sentence long, and I think that an article on religious scripture is allowed a bit of lee-way (The Ten Commandments, for example). Anyway, the template says the article shouldn't be touched before an admin has a look at it, so I'd appreciate it if you could have a look. Thanks. yandman 10:32, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Blocking MRSC

Read your msg now. MRSC has a different view to me. I'm trying to get the point over to him that he is wrong but he doesn't listen. WHat can I do but write long summaries?--84.9.192.124 12:50, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

He is a sockpuppet of banned User:Irate. Please re-block him. His edits have the opposite effect to his claims. He refuses to discuss on talk pages, other than to offer abuse. MRSCTalk 13:32, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
See User:Irate for the range of IP addresses he uses. He mostly edits around Liverpool and Merseyside articles and removes historical information about these places. Here are some diffs for that type of behaviour: [6] [7]
He is currently editing Template:England people message to change the category scheme which is detailed at Template_talk:England_people_message#Category_topology. He claims his edits "fix" the category scheme by re-inserting borough information. This is, however, already covered by district (i.e boroughs are districts). The effect of his edits is to disrupt the scheme he claims to be "fixing". Example here: [8] [9] MRSCTalk 15:32, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

It matters not whether his edits are good or bad. He is banned (see the block log) until such time as he agrees to follow the rules of Wikipedia. Morwen - Talk 15:44, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

He uses a dynamic IP range, and we have been reluctant to block all of it. This may become needed, though. Morwen - Talk 15:50, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

re: User talk:81.21.176.10

Hi Glen... this is almost certainly an open proxy or zombie, as the user's vandalism on wikibooks is typical of a serial proxy vandal we've been dealing with. I'm blocking it 1 month on wikibooks, will report on meta. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 15:51, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Dilllonbot block

Hi Glen S. I created the User:Dilllonbot account that you just blocked. Unfortunately, I made a typo; it should have been User:Dillonbot. I was about to request a rename when you blocked it. As explained on the User:Dillonbot user page, I intend to seek bot approval for this account for a new Java framework I'm working on for the MediaWiki API. Please unblock so I can request a rename. Mike Dillon 02:41, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for unblocking. I don't expect there to be a "next time", but I'll keep in mind that you can create a new account using an existing account. I knew that from running MediaWiki at work, but it had slipped my mind. Mike Dillon 02:48, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
OK. Go ahead and reblock User:Dilllonbot. No need to increase admin workload (except yours I guess, but you're already involved). Mike Dillon 03:00, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Qatar talk page restoration

Hi Glen, I noticed that the recent vandalism of Talk:Qatar has resulted in (a) a redirect to itself and (b) a loss of the talk page history. Can you restore the old talk page in place of the redirect? Thanks, Walkerma 03:36, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

User talk:207.58.130.206

Thanks for that block! I was in the process of reporting the IP to WP:AIV and WP:OP. That openproxy was just carrying on from an IP that was introducing the same misinformation into those articles (where he claimed that various female singers weren't also songwriters...I actually had to go dig CDs out and check the liner notes to confirm that he was full of it). -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 04:34, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Username block

Hi Glenn,

Can you please explain why my account was blocked, I have just created it and have not posted anything yet?

Here is my account name: alex.sj.ca

If you could please clarify...

Thank you, Alex

Hi there, its because sj.ca is a website, and we cant have website names in our usernames (see WP:U). Just create onother one? Alex.sj would be fine for example Glen 08:24, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, I did not realize there is such a website. Can you please delete my account then?

Thanks, Alex

Re:Mas Ahmad

I have no problems with it. I handed out a slightly longer than usual "first block" because I strongly felt this was a bad-faith user, so I'd be inclined to agree with you, but I suggest you post this to WP:AN or WP:ANI to find out if a wider range of admins agree with you. Please let me know where you psoted to so I can also give my feedback there. Cheers, Deathphoenix ʕ 14:21, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

I responded to the ANI page. Thanks, Deathphoenix ʕ 14:30, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Revert at User:Gurch/Reports/ArbComElections

Hi there. You reverted my edit here. Was this because the bot will overwrite it later? I see that an earlier edit seemed to work OK. What do you think? Carcharoth 15:49, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

GenericMoonbatTaunt

You might want to run a checkuser on that nimrod you just blocked. I have a very strong feeling that it is a sock of one of our favorite disruptors, who somehow seems to have avoided an indefinite block under his better known username. Crockspot 19:35, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Kevin Federline article

I have been reworking the Kevin Federline article to keep it NPOV. I hope I have succeeded. Could you read it through and tell me if you think it meets Wiki NPOV standards now? Maybe in a year or so I'll get my own Barnstar for checking it daily and keeping it NPOV. :) But seriously, I would really like your opinion on its current NPOV status. Thanks! Thanks for the Sprotect here. Despite the fact that they were supporting my nom, things were getting out of hand. That discussion (and related issues) are contentious enough without adding socks to the mix. Doc Tropics 20:19, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Not a question, but a comment. This IP belongs to a high school - St. Georges, and thus is subject to abuse from many people, some of which who could care less about the validity of the articles. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mathias-Grayfox (talkcontribs) 23:20, 4 December 2006 (UTC).

Warning template

Hi Glen. I recently cautioned a certain SonicChao against warning users for removing warnings from user their talk pages. From what I gather, the current consensus is that this is harassment, and that users should be free to remove warnings when it pleases them. He pointed out to me that the template he was using was based off your version of the now defunct (for the above reasons) "Wr" templates. Do you still use this template? Have there been more recent (the one I followed was a few weeks ago) discussions regarding this aspect of policy? Thanks, yandman 08:08, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
