Glenrose Shopping Centre (also Glenrose) is a small suburban shopping centre based in the suburb of Belrose, in northern Sydney, Australia. The centre was built during the 1970's and went through substantial facelifts in the 1980s and 1990s. The arrival of the Woolworths Supermarket in the 2000s was a major boost to the centre and the concurrent re-fit that was currently proceeding at the nearby Forestway Shopping Centre served to heighten the relevance of Glenrose Shopping Centre.

Glenrose Shopping Centre is located on Glen Street, Belrose. Glen Street is a notable landmark in Sydney owing to the Glen Street Theatre, situated on the other side of Glen Street from the Glenrose Shopping Centre.

Glenrose Shopping Centre is in proximity to other Forest landmarks including the Forest Showgrounds, and Lionel Watts Oval, home of the Jim Beam Cup Belrose Eagles rugby league team.

Glenrose is one of the two shopping centres of choice for residents of the "tri-suburb area". The "Tri-suburb" area or the "tri-sub" as it is known by locals, includes the suburbs of Davidson, Belrose and Frenchs Forest. The tri-suburb area is one part of the "Forest" area, which encompasses the suburbs of Forestville and Killarney Heights (known as the Forest trough). The Forest forms part of the Warringah Council local government area, which itself forms part of the area of Sydney known as the Northern Beaches. Boundaries to Warringah include:

- In the West; The Garigal National Park - In the East; The coastline - In the South; The Killarney Heights side of the Roseville Bridge - In the North; The suburb of Narrabeen.

[edit] Criticism of Glenrose Shopping Centre

Many local residents of the tri-suburb area of Davidson, Belrose and Frenchs Forest have long criticised Glenrose Shopping Centre for having a dated and "out of step" decor and tenant mix. It has been suggested that Glenrose Shopping Centre is perennially a decade behind the present day e.g during the 1980's, the Centre appeared mired in a 1970's time-warp, while in the 1990's, the Centre had finally caught up with the style of the 1980's (again a decade too late).

[edit] Competition

Glenrose has long been locked in mortal combat with the Forestway Shopping Centre for the hearts, minds and disposable incomes of the residents of the Forest area. Both offer similar retail amenities, however Forestway has a geographic advantage being closer to major arterial roads and public transportation routes. To a lesser extent, Glenrose must also compete with the Forestville Shopping Centre and Warringah Mall.

In 2003 Glenrose was taken over by the Stockland Group, which currently has a development application pending before the Warringah Shire Council to significantly expand retail facilities and parking space at the centre. This has caused considerable backlash among local residents who contend that the scale of the development is inappropriate given the predominantly residential nature of surrounding areas. The fate of the application now lay in the hands of the Waringah Council Administrator, as there are currently no elected Councilors representing Warringah residents.

[edit] Former Shops

A number of notable shops that once operated within Glenrose have now closed down. Previously the centre had two competing supermarkets; Franklins and Payless. After re-development in the late 1990's, Payless closed down and as part of the overall refit of the centre, Franklins moved into the vacated space. A few years later the Franklins store was taken over (owing to financial difficulties) and rebranded as Woolworths, which continues to occupy the space today and is the centre's anchor tenant.

Similarly, Glenrose once sustained two competing video rental stores; Civic Video and Video Ezy. Today only Civic remains.
