From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glenlyon Norfolk School is a private school in Victoria, British Columbia. It was formed in 1986, with the amalgamation of Glenlyon School (a private boys school established 1932) and Norfolk House (a private girls school established 1913).
The school teaches according to the traditional British Columbia provincial curriculum, and also offers the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years program, and at the high school level, the offers the IB Diploma Program as an option. This is in breaking with other private schools such as Upper Canada College and Branksome Hall, where enrollment in the IB Diploma Program is mandatory.
The boys of Glenlyon School attended classes at the picturesque former home of Sir Francis Rattenbury, the British Columbian architect who designed such famous buildings as the Empress Hotel, and the green roofed Legislative Buildings of Victoria. This campus, located on serene Willows Beach, near the Oak Bay Marina, is one of GNS's defining features. The Beach Drive Campus was reserved for boys; Kindergarten to grade seven, until the school reorganized its structure in 2003. At that time, the Beach Drive Campus became co-ed (although boys and girls remained in separate classrooms), and now caters to students from Junior Kindergarten to grade five.
Middle School students (grades six, seven, and eight) attend classes at the Pemberton Woods Campus, the same location (though in different buildings) as the Senior School(grade nine, ten, eleven, and twelve). Pemberton Woods is the former Norfolk House campus, but was largely built after the 1986 amalgamation. Middle School classes became co-ed in September 2006. In September 2005, the Middle school got a new principal, Mr.Graham.
Glenlyon Norfolk School has gone through many changes since its inception. GNS is a member of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) as well as the Round Square.
The Present Headmaster is Mr Simon Bruce-Lockhart.
