The UK Parliament constituency of Glasgow Baillieston was created in 1997. It took 54% of its voters from the previous Glasgow Shettleston constituency and 46% from the Glasgow Provan constituency. It included the areas of Easterhouse, Crosshill, Carmyle, Muirhead, Barlanark, Queenslie, Greenfield, and Garthamlock.

In 1997, the addition of much of the Shettleston constituency increased the notional majority of the previous Provan MP, Jimmy Wray, to 14,165 (40.7 %) over the SNP. In the event, he increased this to 14,840 (46.6 %) over the SNP's Patsy Thomson. Wray took 65.7 %, the SNP 19.1 %, the Tories 7.8 %, the Lib Dems 3.8 % and the SSP 3.1 %.

The seat was succeeded by Glasgow East in 2005.
