[edit] Mission statement

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board’s mission statement challenges all persons to develop their full potential to become confident, versatile, lifelong learners and thinkers. The Board is committed to provide the best educational programs and services to the students and the community and is noted for its diversity in all programs.

[edit] History

The adult high school program was established to provide an effective learning environment to meet the needs of the adult learner. The adult high school program targeted young adults who dropped out of school for various reasons and the older adult who never completed their high school studies.

The program started with sites in three communities: Sydney, Glace Bay, and New Waterford. As the program continued to develop, adult high schools were started in three more communities: Louisbourg, Sydney Mines, and North of Smokey.

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board has been serving the needs of the adult learner through the adult high school program since 1996. Over 500 students have graduated from the program with majority of them continuing on with community college or university studies.

[edit] Curriculum

The Adult High School program offers high school credit courses from the Public School Program (PSP). The senior high curriculum covers all the requirements for the students to obtain the regular Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma or the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults.

There are two semesters in the school year. Students can take up to four courses in each semester, if the courses offered fit the student’s schedule and requirements.

The first semester begins in early September. In November, the first half of the first semester's comprehension exams begin. You begin the second half of the first semester a few days after the comprehension exams have ended. The second half of the first semester ends at the end of January, with your final exams for that semester being held a few days prior. The second semester begins in early February.

You can expect another set of exams before June. The first half of the second semester has its comprehension exams held sometime at the end of March/early April, while the second half of the second semester has its final exams held in the middle of June. The final and "unofficial" day of school is usually the day after the very last final exam, and the last "official" day of school is the last day of June.

Please Note: You are not required to keep the notes that you've obtained after each comprehension exam. Let's use the first half of the first semester and the first half of the second semester as an example; this is usually from September until November and January until April. All information that you've learned from September, October, and November -- the first half of the first semester -- or, January, February, March/April -- the first half of the second semester, will be on the comprehension exam, but once you have finished your comprehension exam you can discard your notes, as the information from these months will no longer be needed; however, you may want to keep notes for Physics 12, Mathematics 12, and English 12, as there are Provincial exams for these subjects.
