Gjern municipality

Gjern municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Aarhus County in the eastern part of the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 144 km², and has a total population of 8.134 (2005). Its mayor is Ella Porskær, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The site of its municipal council is the town of Gjern. Other towns in the municipalities are Fårvang, Grauballe, Sorring, and Voel.

Neighboring municipalities are Galten and Hammel to the east, Hvorslev and Kjellerup to the north, Silkeborg to the west, and Ry to the south.

The municipality was created in 1970 as the result of a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing municipalities.

By January 1, 2007 Gjern municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Kjellerup, Silkeborg and Them municipalities to form the new Silkeborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 857 km² and a total population of 84,167 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
