Giulio Polerio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giulio Cesare Polerio (born 1548, Lanciano - died 1612, Rome) was an Italian chess player.

In 1575, Polerio, who was nicknamed l'Abruzzese because Lanciano is in the Abruzzo region in Italy, accompanied his friend Giovanni Leonardo to Madrid. He and Leonardo played together as a team, contesting their chess skills against the formidable Ruy Lopez and Spain's other master chess player, Alfonso Ceron. Later the Italians were joined by Paolo Boi, also known as Il Siracusano.

After the contest of 1575, Polerio decided to remain in Madrid. A number of manuscripts written between 1580 and 1600 have been ascribed to him. It is mainly due to Polerio's works that it is possible to appreciate Spanish and Italian chess of the period.

After returning to Rome, Polerio became a chess master for the Prince of Buoncompagno. In 1606, he lost a match to Geronimo Cascio in Rome.
