Girls, Inc.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Girls Inc. is a nonprofit organization, involved in education and advocacy for girls. The original name was Girls Clubs of America.

The group originated from a coalition of groups that were formally organized in 1945, in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The current activities of the group include programs aimed at girls developing leadership, being involved in science and math, avoiding early pregnancy, and thinking critically about the media.

The organization has some characteristics of liberalism, e.g. support for Roe v. Wade, and advocating "a positive, supportive environment" regarding sexual orientation.

The organization has worked with many corporate sponsors, but a recent venture with the American Girl dolls collection has generated controversy among conservative groups.
