[edit] Music video
Besides being known for its underwhelming chart performance, "Girl" is also known for its music video, which is a tribute to Sex and the City. The video starts us off with Beyonce, Michelle, and Kelly getting ready for a girls night in Beyonce's apartment with snacks and wine for refreshment. The girls then sit down to watch their favorite show, a Sex and the City inspired show that detail the life and times of three friends (played by themselves) going through the trials of sex and love in the city.
Following the mock credits ("Created by Barber Original Programming and presented by Columbia Records"), the video shows Beyonce and Michelle arriving to meet Kelly for lunch. Beyonce confronts Kelly about her problems and Kelly tries to feign shock, and pretends like nothing is wrong. She tries to turn to Michelle to help her convince Beyonce that nothing is wrong, but Michelle also is not fooled. Meanwhile at home, the girls watching express their disbelief at Kelly trying to hide her problems. Kelly finally breaks down and explains the problems. At first, she says her man needs her so she can't leave him, but the truth is soon seen in flashbacks detailing a disturbing incident in Kelly's life. Kelly had prepared a special dinner for her man, and had wanted to share a romantic evening with him. Unfortunately hours pass before he comes home. Upset, she throws the food away. Although her man tries to explain, she pushes him away, has a breakdown, and runs upstairs to cry.
Beyonce rolls her eyes at the blatant covering up, and tells Kelly that she can see through the sadness, and doesn't need to cry because her girls are here, and they want her to know they love her. Kelly once again denies any problems, but finally breaks down and sheds a tear. While Kelly is being comforted, the girls still do not have any proof of the alleged affair. To counter this, Michelle tells her of the day she saw her man with another woman, giving Kelly proof. Michelle confronts him when she sees Kelly's man browsing through jewelries with the other woman.
Later on, Kelly can seen be seen looking cold and angry as her man comes into their apartment. Although he looks apolgetic, Kelly is smirking when he comes in and dangling a pair of fuzzy handcuffs. Her man smiles, thinking that it's a good thing, but when he turns his back, her face is cold and merciless. It soon shows that Kelly has stripped him completely naked, and locked him on the balcony of their apartment in the cold. Kelly packs her bags and leaves laughing happily now that she has gotten her revenge. With their mission complete, the girls laugh and toast at the restaurant. The girls can finally be seen walking down the street in the city. There are no men present, signifying the strength of the friendship of "Girl".
[edit] Chart performance
The song was chosen to be a single over "Cater 2 U" in a vote at Destiny's Child's official site. However, the song underperformed, peaking only at #23 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and #10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. The single suffered from low downloads, which kept it from reaching the top 20. After "Girl" underperformed, Destiny's Child released "Cater 2 U" as the fourth single from the album.
Despite "Girl" peaking at a disappointing position in the US, the single picked up strong airplay and videoplay in the UK. It became a big hit, gaining a #6 peak, becoming their 12th top 10 hit and 14th top 20 hit in the United Kingdom. "Girl" is also known as the group's final single in the UK, as subsequent singles, "Cater 2 U" and "Stand Up For Love" were both cancelled due to their underperformance in the American charts. In Australia, "Girl" became a top 5 hit in both the Urban and ARIA official charts.
