Giratina (ギラティナ? Giratina in original Japanese language versions) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Giratina is one of the legendary Pokémon that premiers in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Giratina in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Giratina's name may be based on the word guillotine or girasol, a variety of opal.

[edit] Biological characteristics

Giratina's body structure somewhat resembles a cross between a centipede and basilisk with demonic and saurian touches. It has a long, gray, segmented body, with six basilisk-like legs. Its thick legs bear three yellow stylized toes and yellow shackles around each leg. Giratina has two black wings with fire-red horns jutting out from parts of them coming out of its neck. Its neck also has three yellow blade-like crescents around it that match the color and possible material of the crown-like helmet upon its head. These look very similar to a ribcage, opening up the length of its body. Its belly is black with red bars going across it. Its face is very similar to that of Dialga and Palkia, but is slightly more turtle-like than the others. Its red eyes are piercing and intimidating. These characteristics add up to an appearance of a powerful and demonic basilisk.

Giratina is the second-heaviest Pokémon after Groudon.

[edit] In the video games

Giratina is one of the legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It can be encountered after the player receives the National Pokédex; it is located at Return Cave near a lake.

Its Ghost and Dragon-type combination make it resistant and immune to many other types. Even so, Giratina is vulnerable to Ghost, Dark, Ice and Dragon-type attacks. It is the first "undead", or "Ghost" legendary Pokemon. Its trademark attack is "Shadow Drive," a Ghost-type attack that causes it to vanish for one turn (completely negating attacks), rushing the foe on the next turn with a powerful attack (the actual attack is unavoidable — except to Normal Pokemon who are immune to Ghost attacks). It is the only Pokémon to date to have weaknesses to both its own types — Ghost is weak against Ghost type attacks, and Dragon is weak against Dragon type attacks.

It is level 70 when found and apparently lives in a world that is "opposite" to that of the human world.
