Girard is a city in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,902 at the 2000 census.

Girard is located at 41°9′31″N, 80°41′44″W (41.158607, -80.695558)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.1 km² (6.6 mi²). 15.8 km² (6.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it (7.27%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 10,902 people, 4,631 households, and 2,959 families residing in the city. The population density was 688.9/km² (1,783.5/mi²). There were 4,937 housing units at an average density of 312.0/km² (807.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.59% White, 2.44% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population.

There were 4,631 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,672, and the median income for a family was $41,587. Males had a median income of $33,130 versus $20,993 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,077. About 10.3% of families and 12.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.6% of those under age 18 and 9.6% of those age 65 or over.

  • Jib Jab Hot Dog Shoppe, one of the major "attractions" of Girard. People from all over neighboring cities-and even states-come to Girard to eat at this booming small town restaurant. It is modeled after the original Hot Dog Shoppe on West Market Street in Warren, Ohio.
  • The Royal Gardens has been a popular bar and grill for several years. It is family owned and used to house a grocery store. There is a bocce court in the basement. You will often find parents and sports fans eating there after high school sporting events.
  • Tod Park and Liberty Park are two parks in Girard.
  • There are several neighborhoods in Girard including Parkwood and Squaw Creek.

  • James "Scooter" Keagy is a notable athlete from Girard and graduated from Girard High School in 1997. Keagy established several records in football during his high school career. He also participated on the baseball, basketball and track teams. Keagy was recruited by the current Ohio State University football coach, Jim Tressel, to play for Youngstown State University. He transferred to Walsh University where he also made the transition to defense. He is currently a coach in Northeast Ohio.
  • Cachet Murray, from Girard, holds several state Track and Field records. As of 2006, she held the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and long jump records. She is currently on the Ole Miss track team where she competes in several individual and relay events.
