Giovenale Ancina

Giovanni Giovenale Ancina was born on 19 October 1545 in Fossano in the province of Cuneo. He graduated in medicine and philosophy and was also accomplished man of letter and music.

Although his many talents, he nonetheless become priest by call dedicating all his life to the apostolate. He firstly worked in Naples with Saint Philip Neri at the Congregation of the Oratory. Then he worked in Saluzzo where he introduced the use of the Catechism and helped his people growing in piety and charity. He was a great orator. In 1596 Juvenal Pope Clement VIII make him Bishop of Saluzzo.

Ancina died of a suspected poisoning on 30 August 1604. On 9 February 1890 he was beatified by the hand of Pope Leo XIII.

In Naples, Ancina, who was also musician and music editor, composed the Tempio Armonico della Beatissima Vergine, a collection of spiritual songs.
