Talk:Gines de Mafra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The birth date of Ginés de Mafra, accdg. to Jose T. Medina was 1493. This was calculated by Medina based on a notarized affidavit executed on 2 August 1527 at Valladolid by de Mafra where he said his age was 33 or 34. He died probably around 1546 or a few more years after that. There is no exact record of his death. All we know is he elected to be left at Malacca while other survivors of the Villalobos expedition went with the Portuguese ship that brought them to Lisbon. [edit] Raia or Rajah Siaiu was king of Mazaua, not Rajah Colambu

Because of the prolix prose of the Ambrosiana manuscript, the Italian extant codex of the Antonio Pigafetta account of the circumnavigation, and its complex syntax there has been a sustained error in the identification of the king of Mazaua. In the more precise version of the Nancy-Libri-Phillipps-Beinecke-Yale codex, one of three extant French manuscripts of Pigafetta, which is written in clear calligraphy, the king of Mazaua is explicitly stated and named as Raia Siaiu while the king of Butuan is named Raia Colambu. All the Magellan scholars who have read the Yale codex now follow that clear and precise identification. Only those who have not studied this complex and complicated aspect of Magellan historiography still insist on Rajah Colambu being king of Mazaua.Vicente C. de Jesus 13:53, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
