Gimnasio Moderno

The Gimnasio Moderno is a private primary and secondary men-only school in Bogotá, Colombia founded by Agustín Nieto Caballero in 1914 with the help of Jose Maria Samper Brush, Tomas Rueda Vargas, Ricardo Lleras,important Colombians of their times, Ovidio Decroly, Maria Montessori and others.

It is the oldest alternative school in South America, and one of the most prestigious schools in Colombia. The students are sons of the elite of the city.

The school's philosophy is based on disciplina de confianza or trust discipline, which seeks to instill self-confidence and inner discipline in students, as well as developing in them a deep sense of responsibility, honesty, loyalty and friendship. The students are committed to be true gentlemen. 'El Gimnasio' was awarded a national monument status due to the longivity of its infrastructures and what they represent.

The program is divided into four sections. The first section includes 1, 2, and 3 Montessori (named after Maria Montessori), first grade and second grade. The second section includes the third, fourth, and fifth grades. The third section includes the sixth through ninth grades, and the fourth section includes the tenth and eleventh grades.

The school's traditions include a martial band (winners of the 'Batuta de Plata' competition in 1999 with Sebastián Devis as band chief, and in 2006 with Nicolás Medina as band chief, Daniel Devis as medium drums chief, Daniel Torres as small drums chief, Luis Carlos Guerrero as lyres chief, Daniel Brando as trumpets chief, Alejandro Padilla as big drums responsible, German Gracia as cymbals chief, Alejandro Acosta as timbas chief), a Football championship between Gimnasio Moderno and Gimnasio Campestre, and excursions. The school fields sports teams in football, basketball, volleyball and swimming.

The school gives annual recognitions to those students who exalt in different areas. These include personal effort, kindness to others, 'excursionism' and a group recognition of friendship.

Alumini include former Colombian Presidents (Alfonso Lopez Michelsen; Ernesto Samper), Senators (Álvaro Araujo Castro), House Representatives (Nicolas Uribe), proclaimed scientists (Rodolfo Llinas) and authors (Eduardo Caballero Calderon; Daniel Samper Pizano; Ricardo Silva Romero), as well as sportsmen (Felipe Noguera; Eduardo Pimentel) Actors (Diego Trujillo; Jorge Enrique Abello) and artists (Compania Ilimitada; Mauricio y Palo de Agua; Wamba; Para Consumo Humano).

The martial band of the gimnasio moderno is the most old school martial band in bogota withh more than 50 years of working. Their instrumentes are:

  • cymbals
  • Timba

Their chiefes are selected by a democratic process (votation) that have place every year since 1952 on the end of september or the bigining of october, all the integrants of the band do the votation. This is one of the most traditional school bands in Colombia.
