Gimnàstic de Tarragona is a Spanish Catalan sports club based in the city of Tarragona, Catalonia. Their football team plays the 2006/07 season in La Liga after gaining promotion from the Segunda División the previous season. Since 1972 they have played their home games at the Nou Estadi, which currently seats 12,000 spectators. The club was founded in 1886 and as result has been listed as one of the oldest football clubs in Spain [1]. However the club did not actually form a football team until 1914. Between 1947 and 1950 the club enjoyed a brief golden age and played three seasons in La Liga. Today the club also has teams competing in basketball, tennis, table tennis and futsal.

[edit] History of the club

The club was founded on March 1 1886 by a group of fifteen people who met at the Café del Centro on Rambla Nova. The majority of the clubs early members belonged to the upper middle classes and as the club name suggests, it was initially founded to promote gymnastics. Later the club members also began to organise fencing, hiking, boxing and cycling. In 1914 the club absorbed a local football club called Olympic and consequently formed its own football team. In January 1918 they made their debut as a football team in the Championat de Catalunya and by 1927 the club were champions of the B division.

[edit] Club Debut

In 1943/44 Gimnàstic made their debut in the Tercera División and in 1944/45 they were promoted to the Segunda División. In 1946/47 they finished second in the Segunda División and the following season they made their debut in La Liga. In 1947 they also reached the Copa del Generalísimo semi-final but lost to RCD Español. In the quarter finals they had beaten CF Barcelona. They finished their debut La Liga season in seventh place with the highlight of the season coming on January 11 1948 when they beat Real Madrid 3-1 at the Bernabéu. As a result they became the first team to beat Real at the Bernabéu and are still the only team to win there on their first visit. They played two further seasons in La Liga but were relegated in 1949/50 after losing a play-off to CD Alcoyano.
