Gimli, Manitoba (town)

Gimli, Manitoba, is a rural town in Manitoba originally settled in the 1800s by immigrants from Iceland. The area was originally known as New Iceland. Crown Royal whiskey is distilled in Gimli. Gimli's population goes up significantly in the summer due to seasonal cottage residents. Gimli is also the home of a large Viking statue and the annual Islendingadagurinn Icelandic festival.
The five largest ancestries in Gimli are: Icelandic (29.7%), Ukrainian (23.7%), English (20.0%), Scottish (14.3%), German (12.7%).
