[edit] Origins of the surname Gillespie

Gillespie is a Scottish family surname, thought to be from the Gaelic Gilleasbuig, which means "servant of the Bishopry". The Gillespie family were from the Strathspey area in northern Scotland, and are a sept of the clan McPherson, who are descendents of the ancient Pictish Chattan clan,(Chattan: "the league of the cat" ). The family's motto is "Tu certa salutis anchora".

A family of the same name also emerged in Ireland, where the name is less common, but the two families are beleived to be unrelated.
