Gilley Law is one of the smaller suburbs of Sunderland located in between the suburbs of Sunderland and Silksworth and is home to 1500 people. The area is now officially known as Lakeside Village but the old name persists amongst locals. The total area covered by the estate is less than one square mile. It was built as a council estate . Much of the housing in the estate has now been privately purchased and the only council areas left are the seven 16 floor tower blocks, which were built in the 1960s. These tower blocks are mostly home to elderly and retired people. The flats have been expanded and modernised recently.
[edit] Amenities
The estate has one shopping arcade, a modern Methodist church and one small family pub. It is connected to the public transport network by one bus stop. The estate also contains a homeless unit for the homless people of the area
[edit] Tower block naming convention
All of the tower blocks in Gilley Law start with the letter A, just as all street names in neighbouring Farringdon. These towers are named Amble Tower, Aberdeen Tower, Aden Tower, Australia Tower, Aldenham Tower and Altrincham Tower.
