Gildeskål is a municipality located in the county of Nordland, Norway.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Gildeskål (Norse Gildaskáli), since the first church was built there. The first element is the plural genitive case of gildi n 'feast, banquet', the last element is skáli m 'hall'.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1988). It shows a cup. (The motive is inspired by the meaning of the name Gildeskål - see above.)
