Gilda Dent is a fictional character who appears in Batman comic books. She was the wife of District Attorney Harvey Dent, the man who would become the crime boss Two-Face.
[edit] History
Gilda Dent was the wife of Harvey Dent, the district attorney of Gotham City. She wanted Harvey to settle down and raise a family with her, but his long hours in pursuit of justice kept them apart.
During the year of The Long Halloween, a serial killer called Holiday began murdering prominent gangsters. Harvey worked with Jim Gordon and Batman to try to trap the criminal. The investigation ended tragically when Salvatore Maroni, a gangster Harvey was prosecuting, threw sulfuric acid in his face, hideously scarring his face. Harvey's mind snapped, and left his violent "Two-Face" personality in control.
At the conclusion of the story, Two-Face was locked in Arkham Asylum and Gilda prepared to leave town. In a private monologue, Gilda revealed that she was the original Holiday killer, having committed all of the murders up until New Year's Eve. Gilda indicates that Harvey attempted to assassinate Alberto Falcone on New Year's Eve, taking her place, and that he was the one responsible for the crimes from that point on. This confession is ambiguous, since Alberto did not die on New Year's and confessed to all the Holiday murders upon his capture.
Gilda destroyed the evidence of her crimes and left Gotham City for parts unknown. Due to the success of The Long Halloween, the events of the story have been accepted into continuity as the "official" year one/year two story, given that Zero Hour erased the events of Batman: Year Two.
[edit] Appearances in other media
Another version of Gilda appeared in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series, although she was named Grace Lamont. Grace was one of the first to see Harvey after his disfigurement, and fainted at the sight. At the conclusion of the episode, Grace stood by Harvey. She did not appear again on the series - but she did in a handful of comics based on the animated series in the following years.
