Giftas (Married) is a collection of short stories by August Strindberg, published 1884–1886 depicting various marriages. It was written at a time when Strindberg was still happily married to Siri von Essen, and the writings were lighthearted and humorous.
[edit] Court case
One week after the publication of Giftas on september 27, 1884, Strindberg was prosecuted for blasphemy. In one of the short stories, he writes that it is deceptive to regard the wine and bread and the body of Jesu, since the wine is " 'Högstedts Piccadon' à 65 öre the bottle" and the bread was " 'Lettströms' corn wafers à 1 krona the pound". Strindberg was acquitted of the charges on November 17 the same year.
