Giant Rock is a large freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert near Landers, California. In the 1950s it was a gathering point for UFO believers. It was located on land leased by George Van Tassel, a purported flying-saucer contactee and organizer of the conventions. A few years ago Giant Rock split in two. It has been reported that this was due to hippies burning a wildfire directly underneath the southern most aspect of the giant rock.
