Gianmarco Pozzecco

Gianmarco Pozzecco (Gorizia, September 15, 1972) is an Italian basketball player, who is currently playing for Russian league team Khimki Moscow.

In 1999 he won with Varese the Italian League and the Italian Supercup. In 2004 he lost the Euroleague Final Four against Maccabi Tel Aviv. He played from 1999 to 2001 Italian All Star Game and in 1999 McDonal’s Open Championship (NBA star Tim Duncan said he was impressed by the italian player).

Pozzecco has ever had a strange relationship with his national team. He joined Azzurri in 1997 and the following year he partecipates at World Championship, however he had some arguments with coach Bogdan Tanjevic who let him out from winning roster at Eurobasket 1999. New italian coach Carlo Recalcati let him return into the team, and although he lost the calling for Eurobasket 2003, he was part of the roster which won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in 2004. The following year he took part in unlucky Italian squad at Eurobasket 2005.

Pozzecco is tall just 181 cm, he plays as a point guard. He has great technical skills, he is a player full of fantasy, but weak on defensive phase. He won for seven years the ranking for the top Assistmen in Italian League. In 2001 he tried to join a NBA franchise, he attended a Summer League with Toronto Raptors, but his physical weakness made him fail.

His eccentric character has been frequently shown during his career and it made him one of the most valued players in Italy, although he had problems with his coaches through the years. His nicknames are “Poz”, and “La Mosca Atomica” (The Atomic Fly). Although he was born in Gorizia and he grew up as a basketball player in Udine, he is pridely from Trieste
