- The episode's title is derived from the title of the book The Ghost in the Machine by Arthur Koestler, which also inspired the franchise and cyber-punk anime series Ghost In The Shell.
- The “Central Operating System” and its actions in the episode is an homage[citation needed] to 2001: A Space Odyssey’s malevolent cyberintelligence HAL 9000.
