Gholam Hossein Saedi

Gholam Hossein Saedi (in Persian: غلامحسین ساعدی; January 4 - 1936 - November 23 - 1985) was an Iranian socialist novelist and playwright best known for the screenplay of the famous Iranian movie Gaav. He was one of the first modern playwrights and short story writers in Iran.

He was born in Tabriz and very soon (at the age of 16) started his political activities as a journalist in socialistic newspapers of Azerbaijan province of Iran. He was arrested during the coup of 19 August 1953 but soon released. In 1963 he graduated from University of Tabriz in medicine. In 1966 he started his writing career with short stories and plays which soon was performed in Tehran theatres. Years after he wrote two screenplays for two famous directors Darius Mehrjui and Nasser Taghvaee: Gaav (aka The Cow), 1969 and Tranquility in the Presence of Others, 1973 respectively.

In 1974 he was arrested by Pahlavi government for his political activities. After one year of prison he was released and immediately sent to a hospital.

In 1975 he wrote another screenplay for Darius Mehrjui's Dayereh mina (aka The Cycle), 1975 (released in 1978).
