Hello, I'm Andrey from Yaroslavl, Russia. I joined Wikipedia in 2004 and within two years made it into the top thirty most active wikipedians, although I disapprove (and never practice) semi-bot and serialized edits. My interests range far and wide, from medieval architecture and prosopography to Diego Velazquez and David Bowie. Some of my favourite writers are Andrew Marvell, Laurence Sterne, Andrey Bely, and Alain Robbe-Grillet. Curiously enough, I haven't yet contributed a single sentence on articles about any of these.

Having written many hundred articles for Wikipedia, I tend to think that the main challenge for this project is dealing with tendentious editors, whose activities pose a fundamental threat to our ideals of reliability, accuracy, and neutrality. One editor would tirelessly glorify his own nation and/or religion at the expense of others, providing exhaustive sources, most of them in his native language. Another would force his opponents go to incredible lengths in meaningless discussions on talk pages, driving more neutral and busy editors nuts in endless circles (Jogaila syndrome). The third would campaign for renaming medieval localities to their modern names in his native tongue (Gdanzig syndrome). The fourth would churn out pages with black legends about "forgotten genocides", which return zero hits in Google Books (genocide talk).

Dab does have a point. Wikipedia lacks an efficient mechanism for purging the project of cranks, whose neutralisation takes a lot of time and energy from superior editors. While the disruptiveness of vandalism is self-apparent, the tendentious editors are as disruptive in their own way. Instead of tackling the problem, many (if not most) admins do not seem to be interested in mainspace contributions. They come here not to write articles but to make a career, to chit-chat on IRC and to scare those who actually write articles from editing. This may explain why I am the most prolific wikipedian still active in the project who has never applied for adminship.

Whenever I look into administrative matters, I see that IRC is the main problem all the way around. It is the social networking that is alien to an encyclopedia, especially Wikipedia: favourable for cults of personality and basically untraceable. IRC regulars normally evolve in the direction of "everything untraceable on IRC so you can be as mean as you want" philosophy. IRC is poison. It is the heartworm of Wikipedia. When "friendly" people and prophets of "wikilove" say "See evidence of X being incivil [diff]", that will make someone look at a link with "incivility" already in mind. There are few people immune from that filtering effect, and those who are should be on ArbCom.
