Ghanaweb.com
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ghanaweb.com is one of the several websites, perhaps the best known (?) among diaspora Ghanaians, featuring news and articles about Ghana. The site is a secondary source of information (news, sports, facts, opinions, classifieds), taps its core inputs from already available providers, such as the Ghana News Ageny (GNA) and a number of Ghanaian newspapers. Its position is populist and often re-directs alarmist items under sensational headlines at mass readership without authentication. The lower class find the anti-Government rhetoric, delivered without pause, as something amusing, but serious journalists have questioned the rationale of damaging the country's reputation with tribal tirades and filth. For instance, it devotes a lengthy forum to ugly postings under its Say It Loud platform. It also has sections for music, african films, real estate, politics, soccer forum and more. On a positive side, it has sections that may be used for elementary educational, tourist research and informational needs. It is said to have been founded in 1994 by the self-absorbed Francis Akoto, who parades the site under the assumed name "Bajan", intolerable to independent reviews of the webmaster's postings. It is widely believed that Ghanaweb is controlled by a Dutchman from Amsterdam, using Akoto as a front. The web operator does not have a registered office in Ghana, fuelling speculations about who really is behind the bad publicity it gives Ghanaians.
