Getafe Club de Futbol is a Spanish Primera División football club based in Getafe, a town in the metropolitan area of South Madrid, founded in 1920s and refounded in 1983. Their current coach is Bernd Schuster.

The actual Getafe Club de Fútbol was founded on 1st September 1976. Its original name was Peña Madridista de Getafe (Real Madrid Supporter's Club in Getafe). It was registered at the Spanish Sport Authorities: Consejo Superior de Deporte and Federación Territorial Castellana. This club was playing for four seasons in low categories till 1980/81, when it took the name Club Deportivo Peña Getafe. This club was joined with the ancient Club Getafe Promesas, and so it was registered at the Federación Territorial Castellana (Regional Federation from Castille). The actual name Getafe Club de Football (Getafe C.F.) was took in August 1983. This name was taken at a General Meeting of Supporters on 8th July, 1983

From the 1982/83 season and after getting the promotion to the Second B Division, it got it consecutively from the Regional categories, one year and the next one, and the team went back to the hopes of its supporters. The Club started a new period with the promotion to the Second A Division in 1993/94. It was got on 11th June 1994 after winning to U.E. Figueres a bigger and proffesional club. From that moment till now, the team has lived different periods of successes and difficulties.

The team is promoted to the Second A Division in the 2001/02 season after a irregular season, full of non-sport problems(murder of one of the players: Sebas, economic problems...).

After the fantastic 2003/2004 season in the Second A, Getafe CF is promoted for first time to the Primera Division. The team got the promotion in the last match of the season by beating C.D. Tenerife 3-5 with 5 goals of Sergio Valentín Pachon.

[edit] Promotion to La Liga

Getafe were promoted into the La Liga Spanish top division at the end of the 2003/04 season by finishing second in the Spanish second division. They were tipped by many to be relegated straight back down the following season and at first the chance of relegation appeared to be likely with Getafe having a bad start to the 2004/05 season, hanging around regularly in the relegation zone.

But a big improvement in form suddenly came along during the middle and towards the end of the campaign, with good results being produced, enough to eventually ensure an excellent 13th place in the table for Getafe, as they survived relegation comfortably with games to spare. They were the only promoted team that stayed up that season, as both Levante UD and CD Numancia were relegated straight back down.

[edit] The 2005/06 Season

Their next season in the top-flight proved even better. Getafe had a solid start to the season and actually held pole position in the league for a week. However, late October and early November saw a slump in from as they crashed from the heady heights of Champions League qualification spots to mid-table. But the slide went no further and Getafe finished the season in a very respectable 9th position with 54 points. Their consistency and competitive spirit has impressed pundits and fans alike and Getafe are now regarded among the more difficult teams to beat in La Liga.

During the course of the season Getafe took several famous "scalps" with victories over quality teams like Valencia and Atlético Madrid. But their weapon up front was Serbian Veljko Paunovic who bagged 10 goals for the club. The Getafe left-back Pernía with 10 goals (many of them spectacular or outrageous or both) played a big part in their success.

[edit] The 2006/07 Season

The current season in the top-flight is proving even better than last two seasons. They are now regarded as one of the most toughest side to beat in La Liga.^{[citation needed]} They have beaten Real Madrid and held on to an impressive draw against previous year's La Liga winner Barcelona. Getafe CF currently resides in 7th place, the last spot for qualification for the UEFA Cup.

Getafe have arguably the best defence in La Liga in the 2006-07 season, having only conceded 14 goals in 22 matches (least no. of goals conceded by any team)so far this season. At home, they have only conceded 3 goals in 11 matches with the total of 11 clean sheets in 22 matches.
