Geraint Richard Davies (born 3 May 1960) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He was the Labour member of Parliament for Croydon Central, in London, until 2005 and was first elected in the 1997 election. He previously unsuccessfully stood in Croydon Central in 1992 and in Croydon South in 1987.
Davies served as a councillor for New Addington on Croydon Council from 1986 until his resignation in 1997 upon being elected as an MP. He was Council Leader and Chair of Housing. In Parliament, he was a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Department for Constitutional Affairs. His work focused on the environment, family issues, combating domestic violence and dealing with anti-social behaviour. He became known for his work speaking up for the legal rights of prisoners at the US Base at Guantanamo Bay, including his constituent, Feroz Abbasi. He had an office in Ruskin House, Croydon. At the 2005 general election, Davies lost his seat by just 75 votes to the Conservatives' Andrew Pelling.
Geraint was born in Chester and attended Llanishen comprehensive school in Cardiff. He earned a degree at Jesus College, Oxford. Before becoming an MP, Davies had worked as a marketing manager at Colgate Palmolive and set up his own business providing traditional village accommodation in Western Crete, Greece.
Davies was in the national news in October 2005 for claiming the most expenses in his last full year in office. Between April 2004 and March 2005 he received £176,026 - nearly £75,000 more than Croydon North counterpart Malcolm Wicks and £7,000 more than any other MP.
In 2005 Davies was appointed Chair of Flood Risk Management Wales with effect from 1 April 2006. Formerly known as the Welsh Regional Flood Defence Committee, it is the Environment Agency’s body for flood risk management in Wales, responsible for managing a £23.4m budget with the Welsh Assembly Government. He is also Chair of the Labour Finance & Industry Group Wales and now lives and works in Swansea.
