 It is not clear when Marchais re-materialised in France, 1943, 1944 or the like.

At first, he said that he "left" Germany. Then, he claimed to have "escaped" from the same. The "Daily Telegraph" spoke of a new dimension to the Marchais legend. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.139.211.197 (talk) 11:13, 20 February 2007 (UTC).

Marchais's rapid promotion in the French Communist party has not been explained.

There were rumours.
