George Weinberg, an American clinical psychologist who has long been a friend of the LGBT community, regularly attended meetings of a group in New York City called the Gay Activists Alliance (GAA). Watching their struggle for appropriate, arresting soundbites and the media responses, he came up with the word that the GAA had been struggling for: "homophobia," derived from Greek words meaning "the same" and "fear," and meaning the irrational fear of loving someone of the same sex. This new word first appeared in book form in 1974 in his work Society and the Healthy Homosexual.

Weinberg has expertise in various areas. His twelve books include a textbook, Statistics:An Intuitive Approach, which was used as a textbook by about a million students, Self Creation, a self help book that was a Book of The Month Club selection and went into twenty three languages, two books about Shakespeare and most recently, Why Men Won’t Commit. He has written for most of the major magazines, and is frequently quoted by Cosmopolitan. He was a consultant for TV Guide, and has written for television, in 2006 for the Keith Ablow Show.
