George Washington High School is a secondary school of Danville, Virginia. It is a member of the AAA Western Valley District. The school has approximately 1,500 students and 200 staff. The school mascot has been the eagle since 1970-71 school year, upon the school's integration. Previously it was the Cardinal. The current address of George Washington is 701 Broad St. as it has been since sept.1956 when the current facility opened. In 1910 due to an increased enrollment, the high school moved into a building on Grove St. The high school served the city until 1927 under the name of Danville High School.Since the 1927-28 school it has been known as it is to this day,George Washington High School. This name change was recommended by Superintendent G.L.H. Johnson so the high school would be as he put it,"in line with modern tendency in the United States to name high schools in larger cities after patriotic Americans." Danville was the 1st city in the south and 2nd in the nation to honor the 1st president in this way. The Rison Park School was enlarged before it housed the high school.L.B. FLora and Sons were contracted to improve the building for the jr.-sr. high school to the existing 16 classrooms, 24 extra classrooms were added. The then newly Christened name of George Washington didn't appear on the building, instead a quote from George Washington's Farwell Address. The current facility was built on a 60 acre campus. It was designed to house as many as 1,925 students. The auditorium can seat 1,125 and the cafeteria can hold just over 500.Additions were made to the building in 1963. The campus saw the additions of the A-wing and the Industrial Arts Building constructed. In 1971,the citizens voted in favor of a bond that added a vocational wing.It was completed by the 1974-75 school year. The building was fixed up between the summer of 2001 and 2003 after the city voted to refurbish the school on a ballot in election 2000. In the fall of 1997,the DPS(Danville Public Schools) opened four focus schools at the high school level. It functions under the name Langston Focus School.A focus school is a small self-governed school of choice that is organized around a central theme. It is semi-autononomous in that it has a high degree of control over its internal governance while it continues to function under the administrative umbrella of G.W. Since moving to its cureent location Goerge Washington has seen six principals. J.T. Christopher (1941-69), Everett Motley (1969-74), Robert W. Haskins(1974-89), Charles Lackey (1989-96), Joel R. Deboe (1996-2003), and the 1st female, Sherri Huffman (2003-2005). Each administration has been performed at diverse approaches and varied in popularity.
