George Stephanescu

George Stephanescu (December 13, 1843 Bucharest - April 25, 1925 Bucharest) was a Romanian composer, the creator of the Romanian national opera.
He graduated from the Bucharest Academy of Music. In 1877 he was appointed conductor of the National Theatre Orchestra and Singing teacher at the Academy of Music. While teaching the singers at the Academy of Music he aimed at developing gradually the musical repertoire of the National Theatre from vaudevilles to musical comedies and finally to opera. In 1885 he founded the first Romanian opera company. It disbanded in 1902 when the government cut its financial support.
