George Frederick Holmes

George Frederick Holmes (1820-1897) was an American educator, born in British Guiana, educated at Durham University, England, and an immigrant to America in 1838. He taught in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia, and was for a time one of the editors of the Southern Quarterly Review. In 1846 he became the first president of the University of Mississippi. From 1847 to 1856 he was professor of history, political economy, and international law in William and Mary College. For the last 30 years of his life, he was professor of history and literature at the University of Virginia. Professor Holmes prepared a series of textbooks for the use of students in the southern states. The textbooks promoted the justification of slavery.
