George Estrada

George Estrada Jr. was born in Manila, Philippines, and came to America in 1956 with his mother, Milagros Estrada. Grew up in Oakland, California, and attended the University of California at Berkeley, Ohio State University and the University of Texas at Austin. Received Ph.D. in journalism from UT-Austin in 1997. Former reporter and columnist with the Oakland Tribune (1976-1992), and correspondent with the Associated Press (2005). Author of "I Have Tasted the Sweet Mangoes of Cebu," nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Miscellaneous Non-Fiction, 2004. Associate professor on the journalism faculty at Humboldt State University, Arcata, Calif. Writes a weekly column on the Filipino American experience for the Philippine Times of Las Vegas. New book scheduled for release in December 2006, "As Flip As I Want to Be: Ruminations on the Filipino American Experience."
