George Bass (archeologist)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Underwater archaeologist George Fletcher Bass is one of several pioneer underwater archaeologists frequently described as the Father of Underwater Archaeology. Professor emeritus at Texas A&M University, Bass held the George T. and Gladys H. Abell Chair in Nautical Archaeology.
Dr. Bass was the director of the first archaeological expedition to entirely excavate an ancient shipwreck. Since 1960 he has excavated shipwrecks of the Bronze Age, Classical Age, and the Byzantine. A pioneer underwater archaeologist, Bass, like Peter Throckmorton, is frequently described as the Father of Underwater Archaeology.
