George Baker (cricketer)

George Robert Baker was a first class cricketer who played 7 matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 1884 and thereafter for Lancashire County Cricket Club between 1887 and 1899.

He was a formidable batting all rounder, scoring 7563 runs in 249 first class matches at an average of 21.28 with 4 centuries and 39 fifties. His best score was 186 against Sussex, and he posted 153 against Nottinghamshire, 140 against Hampshire and 109 against Kent. He took 152 catches and 145 wickets with his right arm medium pace, including spells of 6 for 18 against Gloucestershire and 6 for 28 against Sussex, at an average of 24.93.

In a testament to his popularity with the crowds and his long years of service to his adopted red rose, his Lancashire benefit season in 1898 raised the princely sum of 1,850 pounds.

He was born on the 18th April 1862 in New Malton, Yorkshire and died on the 6th of February 1938 in Wing Hill, Buckinghamshire at 75 years of age.
