Geoff Lloyd (a.k.a. Emo Fluff Glitter, Geoff Poppadum, DJ Fluff Glitter) (born 20 April 1973, Withington, Manchester) is a British radio presenter. He presents The Geoff Show Monday-Thursday 8pm-12am. Until winter 2005, he co-presented the Virgin Radio breakfast show with Pete Mitchell (the show was known as the Pete And Geoff Breakfast Show).

Geoff appeared on the Channel 4 show Richard & Judy on Thursday 8 December 2005 to celebrate the life of former Beatle, John Lennon.

Geoff also appeared on the Channel 4 show Richard & Judy on Monday 26 March 2007 to discuss the the band Slade, together with the band's frontman Noddy Holder, however, Mr. Holder spoke quite extensively and Geoff did not get a chance to say anything, much to the amusement of the co-hosts on his nightly radio show.

[edit] Early shows

Lloyd, who grew up in Macclesfield, Cheshire, a South Manchester satellite town, began his radio career in 1992 at Signal Radio in Cheshire, as a traffic & travel reporter, before taking over their weekday evening show.

He later signed up with Piccadilly Radio in Manchester, and in 1996 he teamed up with Pete Mitchell to present the afternoon show on Key 103.

The duo rapidly established a cult following with their witty and slightly risque banter, and in 1998 won a Sony radio academy award for their show[1].

[edit] Virgin Radio and the Breakfast show

In late 1998 they were subsequently recruited by Virgin Radio, where they took over the weekday evening show & also covered Chris Evans on the Breakfast show, and again rapidly built up a significant audience. The pair took over the Drivetime (late afternoon) show in early 2002. By 2003, they were the most popular DJs on the station and were moved to the Breakfast Show in order to increase the audience. This they did very successfully, sticking to their well-established formula of off-the-cuff, humorous remarks concerning contemporary news and culture, with Mitchell tending to play the "straight man" to the more outrageous Lloyd. Lloyd occasionally courted controversy with some of his remarks, most notoriously when he expressed willingness to eat the limbs of a dead baby to ease poverty. A complaint against the station was upheld and Lloyd was reprimanded for his comments. Nevertheless, the audience for the show remained strong, despite (or possibly because) of Lloyd's willingness to stray to the edge of acceptability with his remarks.

On 28 November 2005, to the dismay of their listeners, the duo announced that they were splitting up and leaving the Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio. Their final show together took place on 16 December. While Geoff Lloyd remains at Virgin Radio (presenting the late-night show), Pete Mitchell left the station to pursue other projects. Christian O'Connell, from the Breakfast Show on London indie station XFM replaced the pair as host of the breakfast show on Virgin Radio in January 2006

Geoff's new show, entitled The Geoff Show started on 3 January 2006.

[edit] The Geoff Show

The Geoff Show runs for 4 hours, between 8pm and 12am midnight, Monday to Thursday on Virgin Radio. Presented by Geoff Lloyd, the show also features his 'symposium', comprised of himself, his sound producer, Tony Moorey, and his deputy producer, Annabel Port. A daily podcast of the previous night's show is also produced.

Regular features of the show include:

  • The Phone In: listeners telephone the station with their ideas, views and experiences concerning a choice of 101 different topics from the website as well as topics first announced over the air.
  • Porting Controversy: a humorous, self-opinionated, debate against widely held beliefs by Annabel Port, such as 'the Mona Lisa is a good piece of artwork' and 'reading is fun'.
  • Drunk Versus Stoned: a quiz in which someone who has been drinking alcohol competes with another listener who has been smoking cannabis in order to win a menial prize. This is to examine the detrimental effects of cannabis and alcohol.
  • Podcast Dedications: Every Podcast is dedicated to a listener who has emailed or written in.
  • The Dead of the Night: A competition in which Tony describes a dead person's life and the listeners along with Geoff and Annabel guess the way in which he dies. Originally the prize was a CD accompanied with an audio book. Now the prize ranges from sexual toys to CD packs, etc.
  • What the hell are we going to do on Monday night's show: A new feature on Thursday nights show where three options are given for one off features for the next Monday. Example's include 'Why the hell is Michael Winner getting dramatically thinner', 'Opinion Pole' and 'What has Anabelle got up her brown sleeve?'
  • A game with a fellow DJ - Geoff talks to the presenter who succeeds The Geoff Show, and play a game with them. Robin Burke's game is entitled "Rocking Robin" and his theme is the Michael Jackson song of the same name. Geoff asks Robin a question about himself. The twists comes when Robin is not presenting his regular show - Geoff asks the replacement presenter a question about Robin's personality, and they have to answer from what they know about Robin.

When Steve Harris presents the following show, the game is entitled "Call My Band" - Steve reads out three band names, two of which are not real bands. The Symposium have to try and guess which is the real band name. Steve's theme is the theme tune from "Call My Bluff" Greg Burns's game is "Chinese Burns", where Geoff explains to the listeners that he suspects China is soon to be the dominant world power. Geoff then asks Greg a question concerning China, 'in an effort to discover more about our Chinese masters'. Features no longer on the Show:

  • The Shitting Forecast: in an attempt to topple the shipping forecast in the late night ratings, listeners call in to tell Geoff what they had to eat that day, and then Annabel predicts how their bowel movement will be the following morning. This was taken off the air as the quality of the callers had decreased and it did not topple BBC Radio 4. Traditionally, when Geoff asked the caller whether their bowel movements were regular, the caller would reply, "I'm as regular as clockwork, Geoff!"
  • The Dirty Book at Bedtime: an erotic story read by Annabel Port.

Other special features have included:

  • Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera fame came in for an interview and short performance.
  • A 'Sexpert' giving advice before Valentine's Day.
  • 3 exclusive podcasts for the podcast Listeners only - not on the radio. They are ruder and more risque than the usual show!
  • A Dirty Book at Bedtime video podcast.
  • The Head of ITV Entertainment Paul Jackson, criticizing listeners' ideas for TV programmes. It is unknown if he has bought any of the ideas.
  • "Mayor of On-Air" Phillip Elliott, a listener, was chosen to be the mayor of The Geoff Show. He had the 'civic duty' of opening their new website. He also made a speech at midnight just before 6 June 2006 (that is, 06/06/06, the so-called day of the Apocalypse).
  • Danny Wallace visited the show, dispensing advice concerning Geoff's Gay God, since Danny started his own cult, by accident.
  • Beetroot Watch listeners email in where they have spotted beetroots in everyday life.
  • The Geoff Show Turner Prize similar to the real life Turner Prize, except judged purely on ideas for modern art.
  • Essay Writing Contest Listeners were invited to compete in an essay-writing contest, 4 listeners in the end sent in 1000-word essays dissecting the lyrics of a song Annabel had mentioned one show, entitled the Pina Colada Song. Entries were judged on-air by Zoe Williams, a journalist, and Sean E Simmons from Truro was pronounced the winner.
  • Apocalypse Watch On the eve of 06/06/06, listeners were invited to call the show to describe any out-of-the-ordinary events they had seen occur.
  • Mop Gear A parody of "Top Gear", competitors have to register the loudest noise on the decibelmeter in the studio, who will win a menial prize
  • Night fever Competitors have to guess what is wrong with Tony Moorey, who has to act out a roleplay between him and his doctor (Geoff) and describes his malady.
  • Swedish band I'm From Barcelona appeared on the show on January 24, 2007, performing a 2-song set in Virgin Radio's disablet toilet after Geoff had pondered whether they could get into the Guinness Book of World Records by having the largest band perform in the smallest space. While it was not possible to claim the record in the end (there is no regulation on the size of a disabled toilet), 19 of the band's 29 members appeared on the show anyway for an interview before performing in the small space.

Running jokes include:

  • Gay God - a god 'for the new masses'. With Ten Gay Commandments.
  • Geoff Show Novel - A novel written by listeners one sentence at a time

[edit] Annabel Port

Main article: Annabel Port

Annabel Port (born 1975, Southend-on-Sea) is a British radio presenter who currently acts as a side kick and deputy producer to Geoff Lloyd on The Geoff Show, broadcast on from Monday to Thursday on Virgin Radio from 8pm to midnight. She is known for her witty sense of humour and eccentric behaviour. She previously read the travel reports on the Pete And Geoff Breakfast Show which she hosted along with Lloyd and Pete Mitchell before the latter's departure in December 2005.

Prior to working in radio, she taught English to Poles and Mexicans for three years, spent six months doing data input, one week cleaning an old people's home and to her knowledge holds the national record for the 6 years she held a paper round (until the unusually mature age of 18). Annabel is a former presenter of Whipps Cross Hospital Radio[2].

In January 2001 she came to Virgin Radio on a work experience placement and was spotted by Lloyd. Since then she has auditioned to be Michael Hutchence's replacement in INXS and has been to circus school. In a show broadcast on 9 September 2005 Sir Paul McCartney assisted her in completing a song about Beef Tomatoes[3].

Annabel has worked on 'The Geoff Show' since its inception in January 2006 and has devised and presented a number of radio features, including "Porting Controversy", as well as a velvety broadcast voice on the infamous "Dirty Book At Bedtime"[1]. In January 2007, Annabel became the Head of Showbusiness on The Geoff Show, and is still a prominent and notable member of the Virgin Radio team and Geoff Show symposium.

She loves The Smiths, John Travolta, pigs, and above all else tomatoes – she never eats a meal without one.

[edit] Tony Moorey

Tony Moorey is the producer of The Geoff Show and he, Geoff Lloyd and Annabel Port make up the 'Symposium'.

Tony has his own feature on the show called 'The Dead of the Night' where he, as the most historically-inclined and learned member of the symposium, tells the life story of someone from history and then invites Geoff, Annabel and the listeners to guess how this person met their end.

Tony also comes up with a topic every day The Geoff Show is on. Geoff Lloyd and Annabel Port (the two main presenters of the show) also come up with topics.

Before joining Virgin Radio Tony briefly had a job in the sports department of the BBC, but despite his expert knowlege of water polo, his lack of knowledge on more popular sports meant he was soon forced to leave his post.

As a child Tony was given the nickname 'Timid Tony' by his teacher on the account of his shyness. Geoff has since found out about this and referred to Tony as such. Tony has since stated he would prefer to be go by the name of Piglet, and Geoff has complied with this request.
