Geoff Berner

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Geoff Berner is a Canadian singer / songwriter / accordion player originating from Vancouver, British Columbia. Following several years fronting the band The Terror of Tiny Town, his first solo EP was released, entitled Light Enough To Travel (2000). Vancouver band "The Be Good Tanyas" covered the title track, and had some chart success with their version in England, which helped to kickstart Berner's career. His first full-length album, We Shall Not Flag or Fail, We Shall Go On to the End (2003), contains notable songs such as "Clown and Bard," "Iron Grey," and "Maginot Line." One particular track from the album, entitled "We All Gotta Be a Prostitute Sometimes," has been covered by a surprising number of artists, considering Berner's relative obscurity. Berner has gained a cult following over the years, especially in the Vancouver area.

In 2005, Berner released his third studio album, Whiskey Rabbi, on Black Hen Records with the help of Diona Davies of Po' Girl, on violins, and Wayne Adams of Zolty Cracker, percussion. Both musicians joined Berner in his European tour in support of the album.

Geoff Berner was the support act on Kaizers Orchestra's European tour covering Norway, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands and Germany in 2005. He also supported Kaizers Orchestra again on the Scandinavian part of their Grand Finale Tour.

Berner has also written a humorous instructional booklet, How to be an Accordion Player, published by Kolakovsky Press in August of 2006.

He is the stepfather of actress Genevieve Buechner.

[edit] Politics

Between 1988 and 2001, Berner was active in the Green Party of British Columbia and was a member of former leader Stuart Parker's inner circle. He ran as a candidate at the federal and provincial levels in the general elections of 1991, 1993, 1996 and 1997. His most high profile campaign, however, was as a candidate for the Rhinoceros Party of Canada in the 2001 provincial general election against future premier Gordon Campbell.
