Hi was making some edits to Governor Schwarzenegger's page. After looking up about his accident, I noticed some work needed to be done. I mainly cited references and moved some the "trivia" to more appropriate sections.

Please don't shoot me, as this is my first time editing and just trying to improve the article. (via citing sources, and moving the trivia in an appropriate manner)

Please let me know if I made any goofs and how I can improve in the future. Thanks! jaskemr


[edit] No Turtle Scouts

The link is NOT a dead link. When a link does not work, you may need to try again in a few minutes as dns information sometimes takes a bit of time to propogate to servers that have not ever used that domain name before. Turtles subverting the principles of Scouting is a serious problem in some places. Awareness that this is problem is like an innoculation, it prepares Scouts and their parents to avoid the dis-ease.

You have removed this twice now. The most recent justification was "This isn't the link to the "parallel organization" (which seems to be very local), but to an anti-pov rant page. It has little or no bearing on the global scouting movement, so I'm removing it again"

The Turtles within Scouts is very much NOT local. This is an awareness and youth protection issue. Please help satisfactorily label this link. The link is not to a "rant page" but to the first public history of abuse that has been going on for decades in the US. The postings are of fact, not simply opinions and not rants. The owner of the site is one of the best active Scoutmasters I have ever met. His troop produces some of the best Eagle Scouts from the Occoneechee Council. Because some of the local turtle scout members have been very active in the international scouting program, it is possible that this abuse is international in scope. Gentgeen, Are You A turtle ? or are you part of the solution?

I caught your post on Angela's talk page. Here is the page where such copyright violations can be listed: Wikipedia:Sites that use Wikipedia for content. Unfortunately there are only very few people that actually go to the trouble of sending the appropriate emails to the copyright violating websites. I'm sorry I didn't see the Wikiproject discussion on Years in Science pages. I was removing the CE/BCE because they aren't used anywhere else in Wikipedia, that I know of - certainly not in any of the other "years in XXXX" listings. (e.g., 1st century BC) Should we just have them in this one category? I might know your friend on GP-B. I think most of us should be working in the Hansen building in Stanford now; It's pretty small as the upstairs doesn't even have a bathroom. Who is the individual ?

Thanks for the explanation, I feel like I'm up to speed now.  :) Your objection makes total sense too. Hopefully with the boost in traffic the brilliant pictures section will get a bit bigger (rather than the 7 nominations at present), so it would be best to wait a few weeks for featured articles to get back to its usual size first. I understand this. Maybe I should've made it more clear in my postings that only Mav and I are really involved in the stylistic argument over the article. I understand that our disagreement centers on policy processes for the removal of articles. I don't mean to get into a revert war, but I guess that we do disagree over whether or not two policies are entailed and really nothing vis-a-vis the article's contents. I address the policy dispute in the first paragraph of my last posting on the talk page; the rest probably isn't pertinent to your concerns. BTW, I sincerely apologize for getting you caught up in my argument with Mav, which has been recurring for roughly a year and a half over a series of articles. In all honestly, my real concern is that the removal of this particular article will be read as a tacit sign that his stance is correct, which has far more to do with writing history articles than policies for the featured page. 172 12:45, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

I saw your post saying you'd requested some picture. Great - I think folks are correct that the article needs some. I have three that I want to add, but that were taken by a friend (who hasn't get answered my "gfdl?" email yet). They are:

  1. a handful of germinated barley in someone's hands
  2. the "brewing" room (I forget what it's called - the giant oak wart barrels filled with nasty barleybeer)
  3. a very nice one of copper stills (I think at Lagavulin)

Once I have permission, I propose to add a vertical bar to the article's RHS, and add these (and hopefully some more) in production-chronological order. I don't have decent photos of the distillery as a whole (well, I do, but they have recognisable people in them, including myself), malting, milling, bonded barrels, or a final product shot. Well, you are sort of the keeper of the "year in science" pages. But I would have thought that much of the point of such pages would be to provide a list of notable events to help orient the reader to the happenings of the time. True, Boyer himself is encyclopedic, by virtue of having written some widely-used texts; and we (rightfully) have an article on his achievements. But is his birthdate encyclopedic enough to mention in a chronology of science? Would you want to include birthdates of every minor textbook author in this way? Would the article then be better?

At User talk:80.131.87.92 you wrote "Any further posting of copyright infringements is grounds for banning editing from this IP address" after there had been two articles created by that IP, both apparently self-promotional. Please identify the part of the Wikipedia:Banning policy or Wikipedia:Blocking policy which you believe permits banning or blocking on the basis of just three (the existing two plus a new one) suspected copyright infringements. More generally, please remember that threatening people is generally not a good first move when explaining policy. Much better to tell them the policy first, then only consider doing more if they continue once they know what we're after. Jamesday 20:02, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Sysops may also permanently block user accounts that do essentially nothing but vandalism. This user's only contributions at that time were to add copyright violations to the 'pedia, which I consider to be vandalism. This was discussed on #wikipedia before I made the warning, and again after, and none of the other sysops at the time saw anything wrong with the warning. Gentgeen 03:31, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I don't see what the problem is. The user hasn't been back after the last copyright violation post, which was before I left the warning. If someone has made both legit and non legit edits, then they should be treated as simply in need of coaching, but a user who has done nothing but violate international law, not to mention our policies, should not be treated with kid gloves. Hi Gentgeen, I need a chemist's opinion on this. Porphyrin has been categorised as an aromatic hydrocarbon. It is, as you will know, a tetrapyrrole and does not contain aromatic structures at all! Would you be able to suggest a better category? I'm thinking of making some subacticles on the enzymes and compounds of the heme synthesis pathway, and was wondering how to classify all these things. Hi Gentgeen,

I'm about to correct your modification to bull riding. The bull's testicles are not bound. Somewhere that myth got started, but it isn't true. You can confirm it for yourself by watching a bull riding on a hot day... the bull's scrotum hangs down about 10 inches and swings in the breeze while he is bucking.

Most folks that protest rodeo miss the mark. The rough stock events; bull riding, bare back and saddle bronc are the ones least likely to injure the animals. The timed events are the ones that do the damage: Calf roping and steer tripping are the worst.

A category of chemicals, that is the noun which can be made plural rather than the adjective of or having to do with chemistry, is one which contains substances used in or obtained by a chemical process, whereas a category of chemistry is one which encompasses the science of these substances and its application, including such things as the articles on CAS registry number and Crystal. - Centrx 04:12, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Yes, but CAS registry number does not belong in a Chemicals category; it is an identifier with an associated concept. crystal and liquid, for instance, also do not belong in a Chemicals category, for they are properties with associated processes. While an ion is a chemical, the article Ion might belong in the Chemicals category but the article is on much more than simply the chemical, it is an article on ionization and on ioniziation energies, just as crystal is also an article on the process of crystalization. The reason for this is because of encyclopedicness, closely related concepts and items go in the same article; they are related at length and stand on their own, rather than having an unmanageable and unreadable slew of repetitive, separate articles on similar things. For instance, there is no article on superconductor, because there is on one superconductivity which discusses all matters related to that, among which it also goes into the superconducting chemicals.
I see that my movement of some of the categories may have been incorrect, or at least not of sufficient onus that it warranted doing anything about. However, for instance, the category Explosives and the articles colloid, complex (chemistry), mixture, solution, and solvent, do not belong in the category Chemicals. The Explosives category contains numerous articles which are not about the chemical agents, but about for instance, fireworks in general and detonating cords. These do not belong in this category any more than, say, "dinner plate" by virtue of its make of porcelain. A colloid is a form of matter, a property, it is not a chemical. Mixture is in a similar situation. Solvent should be merged with Solution, and the article Solution does not belong in the Chemicals category. - Centrx 04:42, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

You seem to be categorising three different things under Category:Locomotives: individual locomotives (e.g. Mallard), locomotive classes (e.g. British Rail Class 53), and locomotive types (e.g. 4-6-2). The reason I put the separate article there is not because of the difference in British versus American English but because there's a (blurry) difference in the meaning. Exhibition games tend to be devoid of serious competition and preparatory in nature, where friendly matches generally refer to matches that can be competitive, they just don't count for anything. --DMG413 23:38, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thank you so very much for cleaning up this section! You treated the Antelope Valley with due respect as well - major kudos to a Northlander and Silicon Valleyite that cares about us Southlander inland desert dwellers! (very broad grin) Now I feel more like a Californian on Wikipedia, and less like an out of stater. (You wouldn't believe how many people I meet casually who erroneously think the California portion of the Mojave Desert is part of Arizona or Nevada. . .) And you did this edit without me updating the Antelope Valley article with a total population number (easier said than done). You (evidently) read my article, saw my edit about the two largest cities there, and proceeded to edit correct info about the AV. Hey, just going through the disambiguating pages. Noticed your image right there. Just wanted to check with you, because I'm faiiirly certain but you never know. This is Baghdad, Iraq we're looking at, correct? Just wanted to make sure because you could be referring to the Bagdads in Arizona, Florida, or the one in Tazmania. If it is the one in Iraq, could you change the file name and link to Baghdad?

Thanks for you help on the TOC discussion. I am now trying to get to grips with changing my UI! I have read http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_styles which I think is the right page, but am not 100% sure of what I actually have to do.

It appears that I should create a page called User:Martin TB/monobook.css and then add the information to that page in order to make my UI change. Is that correct? I wanted to ask before I made any changes.

I welcome others' input and contributions, but I won't accept significant removal of detail, not unless that detail can be appropriately moved to another article or unless it can be shown that we can say just as much in fewer words. I'm in California, and I know what it means. San Juan Capistrano's coat of arms is titled Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, and includes the umbrella and keys reserved for a basilica. the pre-statehood list only covers the area that is now the US state of California. The title Governor of the Californias was used from the begining of the colinization of Baja in the late 1600s, but although their authority "technically" included the current US State, they actually had no control unitl Portola, Fages, Lausen and Serra got to San Diego. If that's the case then, as I indicated, the "list" article should be edited to reflect that reality. While there is no doubt that he was the first governor of what is now the US state of California, the title Governor of the Californias was in use from the begining of the colonization of Baja. Why do you think it is best to separate out articles from Category:American actors, so that they can only be found through the actor category structure if you know that they were Californians? The state subcategories for people have always been problematic, because people move too much around the U.S. for any one state to be particularly important to understanding an individual. Most notable people are going to be notable on a national scale. That's why it's best to keep the state categories complementary, but not mutually exclusive to, the national ones. That was a good catch that just one of the two links labeled Santa Clarita really went to Santa Clarita! That error came about because I made heroic efforts to preserve the work that came before me -- the wikilinks to the 478 incorporated cities and their alphabetical order -- while at the same time formatting the whole thing into a readable table with correct wikilinks to counties and proper wikidates for their dates of incorporation. So any errors in the wikilinks to the cities would naturally remain. Your edit alerted me to the fact that this list had not been previously checked very carefully for accuracy, so I did some checks and found several cities mis-alphabetized, two misspelled, and one with a superfluous blank! A superfluous blank?! Curious, I went back to the version that existed before I started messing with it, and sure enough, the city of Galt has a blank after its name that the others didn't have. If nothing else, this proves a very anal attention on my part to preserving the work of the giants on whose shoulders I stand. Now, this list is perfect! (Famous last words)

Hi again. I was wondering why you added Martha's Vineyard to Category:U.S. wine regions. As far as I know, there are no well-known modern wineries on the Vineyard. The one that I do know if is called Chicama Vineyards and I don't think you can get it off-island. I've never tried it, but I've heard it's not very well regarded. Do you have a reference for more than just Chicama, since I don't think one minor winery qualifies a place as a "wine region", even if it was historically named "The Vineyard". First of all information on how the thousands of Belarusians were forced into the Unia can be easily found, take for instance the whole Ukrainian Cossack uprisings and Peter Mogilla who shed quite a lot of blood defending Orthodoxy. Second the persectution of Belarusians, their language and culture during the interbellum Poland is also a sourced fact, as is the forceful confiscation of Orthodox proprerty. Finally the numbers of how many Belarusians willfully returned to Orthodoxy are also 100% genuine. Why did you remove them, that is another question. Sorry for troubling you with Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster again. I noticed that all the other dioceses of Britain are named as '(Arch)Diocese of Somewhere' & only Westminster has 'Roman Catholic' in the page title. Hope you don't mind, I moved this article back to County Route G2 (California). The reasoning was three fold

  1. I'm eventually going to move all routes to this scheme to better unify them under one common naming scheme
  2. The old CountyName County Route LX scheme worked fine for some routes in one county but about half of county routes in California are cross county and currently the article resides at one counties name w/redirects for the other counties. That is something that had been bugging me since I started the Wikiproject and writing these articles. I had considered common names like Lawrence Expwy as a solution, however that was even worse as most of these routes have multiple names along their lengths. Also I considered seperating them out giving each county it's own article, however most of the roads have too little info to warrant an individual article for each county.
  3. After deeper searching I can find no evidence for the routes actually being named something like Santa Clara County Route G2. The state and counties refer to them as just County Route G2 or by their colloquial names like Lawrence Ex/Quito Road. My choice of the original name was based more on original research then actual fact like the new names are.

I object to the deletion of this page, and I object to the manner of its deletion without discussion. This was discussed. I acceded to the objections to the title of the prior article, and allowed the page to be deleted. I then retitled the article. Discussion was had, and the article was accepted.

If you are going to do this, the article on Saints needs to be listed as "disputed" unless it acknowleges that the conduct of some of the "saints" veered from general definition.M dorothy

Just passing through, but even assuming this was not in violation of the previous deletion decision, this newest article is equally ill conceived. "Crimes against humanity" is a concept under modern international law that simply doesn't have meaning when applied with hindsight to long dead historical figures, let alone those for whom fact is difficult to separate from fiction. The fact that your genocide article was deleted means this wouldn't have a chance of surviving AFD, considering how much less focused the concept is. The article specifically acknowledges that it is applying a modern standard retroactively.

Wikipedia has articles defining "war crimes" and "crimes against humanity". According to the articles in Wikipedia, the listed saints engaged in those activities.

I have taken the time to track down a list of saints involved in crimes against humanity. They were harder to find than I thought, but I made a list. There are probably other people out there that would like access to such a list, without having to go through all the saints to find examples. You are censoring this list.

The original title was "Genocidal Saints". The discussion focused on the title. I agreed that it was inappropriate. At the time I did not know how to change a title once begun. I therefore waited until the article was deleted, and then began with a new title meeting most of the objections.

I chose to use a separate article, rather than editing the main article on Saints. If you persist in this deletion, I wil edit the main article. If it is vandalized, I will object.M dorothy

The redirect I deleted was occupying the place the article in question should have been located at based on the naming convention established at WP:CASH. Deleting a redirect with little or no history (the one in question had 2 edits, both by SPUI, and the second was a very minor change) to comply with established naming conventions is well established under the speedy deletion guidelines. SPUI wanted a redirect deleted to move a page that was located according to the previously named guideline to a proposed naming convention that did not gain consensus. Such a move, away from an article title supported by Wikipedia's naming guidelines, to a name that failed to gain the support of the community not. It has been suggested by User:BrianSmithson that the Beer and brewery categories should be renamed. The proposal has been supported by User:Syrthiss, and supported and expanded by myself. The notion is that the regional categories should follow the format of "Beer and breweries in Africa" /Europe/Asia/North America/South America/Oceania. "Brewers and breweries" could also be renamed "Beer and breweries by region". And all the countries should also be renamed (and merged if needed) as, for example, "Beer and breweries of Germany", "Beer and breweries of Britain", "Beer and breweries of Poland". The word in each case would be beer rather than beers to allow for general articles on beer culture in each region as well as individual beers. Hey Gentgeen, I don't have any maps I can send you (yet) to prove that I had the river correct, but I walk them both (San Thomas Aquino Creek and Guadalupe River) regularly and know which is which. In the map you sent, you can see the Guadalupe in the upper right, but the part where the Guadalupe River meets Rivermark isn't actually on that map. I concur with StonewallCanyon and I confirmed this with multiple maps, including a modern Thomas Brothers Guide, an old 1901 USGS San Jose quadrangle, and the 1876 Historical Atlas of Santa Clara Co. The San Tomas Aquinas Creek is on the west side of Lafayette Street, well outside the Rivermark area. Rivermark extends eastward roughly to the Guadalupe River (although the area immediately adjacent to the river had already been developed as the Mansion Grove Apartments and the historic Lick Mansion). The entire Sun, Rivermark, and Mansion areas together correspond to the property held by James Lick, which can be seen in the 1876 atlas as extending precisely from Lafayette St. (then called Alviso & Santa Clara Road) to the Guadalupe River. Additionally, the very name of Rivermark itself comes from its proximity to the river (not a creek) and you can see the Guadalupe plainly labeled on the map at Rivermark's web site. I stand corrected. It is closer than I thought. However, it is a good half mile from the river (I was in the neighborhood today and did some "original research" with my odometer). Additionally, I don't see what about this development merits its inclusion in the river's article to the exclusion of other properties actually on the river's banks. If it were not on the banks, I would not be suggesting its inclusion. Here is a picture I took from the opposite shore (the San Jose side) looking at one of the Rivermark housing developments. [25] This picture shows the Guadalupe River, the levee, and the close proximity of the development. From your pictures, it is clear that you have visited part of the Rivermark development. Pontifical North American College I am attorney for the Pontifical North American College in Rome and have come across the Wikipedia article on the College. From the history of the article I see that you, as an administrator, have made a number of useful and appropriate comments and changes to the article and am thus turning to you for advice and assistance.

The current version of the article, though short, contains a number of factual errors in its description of the College's activity and status. I would like to correct those errors, but do so in a way that they do not recur by reason of the (generally laudable) open editing policy of Wikipedia.

Hello. Somewhat related to this, is there a way to verify that a user has been posting from a specific IP address? Around the time Michaelch7 posted the comment you replied to in that talk page, my user page [26] [27] and talk page[28] pages were vandalized by an anonymous user who accused me of being a vandal. Shortly after these vandalizations were undone, Michaelch7 posted in my talk page [29], also accusing me of being a vandal because I removed his links to the GoState campaign. While I'm certain he was the person behind the anonymous edits, I'm wondering if there's a way to confirm my suspicion. I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to be asking, but I can't seem to find any pages here on Wiki that would allow me to find the IP a registered user posted under. Hi. Thanks again for the link; so far I have only got a comment that the work is an obvious puppet but no solid confirmation that it's him. Anyway, the guy continues to be a thorn in my side. When I put up an obvious POV fork he created up for deletion, he began using personal attacks, repeatedly accusing me of vandalism and agenda pushing. While I've put in a complaint in WP:PAIN for his antics, I'd like to ask if you could intervene in the deletion discussion, since you've dealt with his additions before. I'm sorry if this isn't how I should deal with the problem (or if it's not the right way to go about it), but his attacks are stressing me out and I'm running out of options on what to do. Hi again. This guy is active again, although he's back posting from his original account, CSU Spartan (talk • contribs). He's not adding links, but instead is making provactive, sometimes POV edits in related pages ([30], [31], [32]). There anything that I should do, or should I just be patient with his edits? I am ready to revert his addition ot the CSU page, although with the schedule I have I don't think I'm ready to deal with another headache from him calling me a historical revionist. The Indigenous Peoples of North America Portal has been established, as a starting point for those wishing to learn more about the subject, with information and links on a wide variety of issues. It also contains news regarding the continent's various tribes and nations. It's a graphically pleasing site, and everyone is encouraged to check it out.
The project's home page has a new design, featuring tabbed subpages on participants, templates, articles, categories, and the to do list.
The Article Classification lists have been moved to their own subpage due to size. This is a sign of progress in the ongoing work of this project.
The project's talk page template has been updated, along with the classification system, to include the assessment on the talk pages of the articles that have been classified and assessed.
Balance
As the Project reaches its first six months of activity, the great effort all of you have invested in it has turned the vast information available on Indigenous North American topics from a deorganized cumulous into an excellent and easy to consult database. Although much work is still in order, few WikiProjects are able to obtain the amazing results we are proud to show today. To all of you, thank you and congratulations!
The assessment of articles within the scope of the project is still an ongoing process. We need people to help in this who are not contributors to the articles they are assessing. Also, there is the ongoing need for identifying and cataloguing articles that fall within the scope of this project. As of today, nearly 1,500 have been identified within the Project's scope.

Dear Gentgeen: There is a POV issue going on in the articles about North America, Central America and even in the Template: region. If you look carefully into the recent history of the first article, you will find that there is some kind of political activism to exclude Mexico from North America. Well, this is obvious a POV issue and I tried very neutrally to rewrite the article. This certain anonimous user is taking advantage of his changing IP. You warned him about reverting the article too much, but he has contined doing such a thing. Please, I would like to know how to prevent this. We have been discussing this article with the other users interested and we kinda reached an agreement, but this anonimous user is making it hard for everyone. Per Wikipedia:WikiProject California/Assessment, importance is to be graded based not on some category hierarchy, but on the subject's importance to California. For instance, Top articles are based on the following criteria: "Subject is a "core" or "key" topic for California, or is generally notable to people other than students of California. They define and determine the subject of the California WikiProject." San Francisco International Airport is clearly notable to people other than students of California - it's the second-largest airport in the state. Yes, it's as important as Pebble Beach. More important, in fact. Pebble Beach is just some golf course a few rich people visit. SFO is the first and last part of California seen by millions of visitors from around the world. The largest dedicated international terminal in America. An economic engine for the state.
Here's an example of how transportation is essential to understanding California history. The huge Asian emigration to the Bay Area has helped turn SFO into the largest Asian air travel gateway in the United States. In turn, the Asian population and economic connections to the Bay Area have been bolstered by the Asian airline service. California is a state whose history is inextricably linked to transportation - from the Central Pacific to the Ridge Route to the Embarcadero Freeway to San Francisco International Airport. California has always been a state on the move, and thus I would argue that transportation articles are vital to a full understanding of our state's history, sociology and economy. No matter who the user is off Wikipedia, the block in question was inappropiate and against policy. What part of the blocking policy supports an indefinate block in this situation? Was there vandalism? I didn't see any. Excessive reverts? I see a content dispute on two articles that the user didn't turn into a revert war, so no. Personal attacks, posting of personal information, or persistant copyright violations? Nope. Innapropiate username? Not that I can see. Even if you felt that the user was being grossly uncivil, "Blocks for gross incivility are controversial". Was the user posting crank information? I don't know, but that section reads, "Obvious cranks and users who aggressively and repeatedly violate fundamental policies may be blocked if there is a consensus among uninvolved users that it is necessary." Where were uninvolved users asked about the user in question's activites and consensus reached? Was this brought up at WP:ANI before you blocked? An indefinate block on a user is effectivly a ban, and banning is not within the rights of a lone-wolf admin as the first step in a conflict resolution. Had you imposed a 24 hour block, I wouldn't have even looked into the case. I would have just told Miltopia to go to sleep and come back tomorrow. Gentgeen 00:35, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

The least you should have done was to simply reduce the block period, rather than allow me to have to see that I have no rights to protect myself from his stalking. When admins don't provide some punitive action to deal with those whose efforts are to harass others, then they simply persist in their quest. Your unilateral unblock was just as lone-wolf as anything I did, so nect time have the decency to at least ask why a block was performed. Undoing other admin actions does zero to build solidarity on this website. Why would he have to talk to you about it? Hopefully, being an admin, he's competent enough to read a contributions page, and hopefully, being an admin, he's competent enough to see that none of Miltopia's actions deserved an indefinite block. This unblock wasn't unilateral, it was supported by every single page of the relevant policies and guidelines. Hi! I question your assigning List of Roman Catholic dioceses a B-quality. The list is far from complete - there are maybe 10% of all dioceses worldwide listed, and there's no organization for it. At best, it's a "start". I'm also not sure how important it is compared to getting national lists of dioceses up and maintained. My goal was not to get rid of redirects (you point to a 'how-go-guideline'), but to make the text of the article clear as to the subject being discussed. I noticed that you added "c"s and "d"s to the cite refs link, I found an article that has about 150 refs to the same link and busts the 130 limit giving cite error 7, any chance of getting e's and f's added? I'll be happy to perform the move, but note that moving a page is not an action that has to be done by an admin.
