[edit] Samurai Shodown - Samurai shodown IV

Little is known about Genjuro's childhood; he claims to have killed his family and at least a thousand other people. His mother was a prostitute, until Genjuro killed one of her clients. As he went to leave, she attacked him, leaving the scar on his back, and he killed her.

Eventually, he became a student of Nicotine Caffeine, along with Haohmaru. The two became very close friends and one of the best samurai in the academy. Then Nicotine decided to have Genjuro fight Haohmaru to determine who was stronger, as well as to determine to whom he will give the scroll that would enhance the victor's abilities. The two men fought for hours, until Genjuro defeated Haohmaru, and had to be restrained from killing him. Nicotine stopped the fight and banished Genjuro; true strength does not mean killing a friend in a duel.

Genjuro has made it his goal in life to bring suffering upon Nicotine and Haohmaru. He hates Haohmaru especially, because he resembles the man his mother was with when he killed them. He is travelling through the country, picking fights with (and most of the times killing) anybody on his way.

[edit] Samurai Shodown V

Genjuro is approached by a mysterious, cloaked figure during his travels. The mysterious person asks Genjuro to kill the Lord of Hinowa, Gaoh for a handsome sum of money. The cloaked figure states he is just one of the many people who want him dead. As Genjuro runs off to Hinowa, the cloaked figure laughs.

Genjuro returns to the cloaked figure. Before he pays Genjuro, however, the person has a second request. Not interested, Genjuro attacks the cloaked figure to reveal the person was actually Sankuro Yorozu all along. Now proclaiming he is the new Lord of Hinowa, he asks Genjuro to join him and together they could rule. Genjuro then attacks Sankuro again but is saved by Gosichi, Fuyo, and Ippachi. Giving up, Genjuro turns his back on Sankuro and tells him he never wants to see them again. As Genjuro walks away, Sankuro shoots Genjuro in the back. With his last strength, he attacks the group but they escape unharmed and Genjuro falls to the ground. He then wakes up moments later to find that Haohmaru has saved him. Genjuro then attacks Haohmaru but he too gets away. Genjuro then states that one day he will kill Sankuro and Haohmaru and that this will be his new resolution.

[edit] Trivia

  • In all but one game, Genjuro is voiced by Kong Kuwata, who also voiced Fatal Fury's Geese Howard and Duck King, as well as Samurai Shodown's Neinhalt Sieger. In the most recent game of the Samurai Shodown series (also known as サムライスピリッツ天下一剣客伝 or Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuden), Genjuro is played by Toru Ohkawa.
  • Most of Genjuro's special attacks are based on the Japanese card deck known as Hanafuda, with the actual hands being derived from the game Koi Koi.
  • The only games outside the Samurai Shodown series that Genjuro has had an appearance in is SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom and the Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.
  • In his appearance in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, Genjuro's name is romanized as "Genjyuro".
  • The Rurouni Kenshin villain Shishio Makoto shared an uncanny resemblance to Genjuro while he still worked as a Chōshū hitokiri.
  • Genjuro shares his hairstyle and facial structure with Ultimate Ninja from the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. Their villainous personalities also match.
  • Genjuro also shares his last name and a small portion of his fighting style with the protagonist of Ninja Scroll, Jubei Kibagami (it should also be noted that the developers of Samurai Showdown aided in the creation of Ninja Scroll, since several references to the Samurai Shodown verse can be found. A major example of this is the character Dakuan, whose appearance was borrowed from Haohmaru's and Genjuro's sensei, Nicotine Caffeine).
  • The Hanafuda cards that appear during his Five Strike Flash supermove are that of a "winning hand" in the card game.
