[edit] Origins

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

When the Shapers abandoned Sucia Island, some of the Serviles were left behind. They slowly, over the centuries, polarized into three groups, the Obeyers, the Awakened, and the Takers. The Awakened believed that since the Shapers had left them behind, alone, to fend for themselves, the Shapers had forfeit all rights to the serviles' alleigence and they deserved to be treated as equals, quid pro quo. They were very proud of all they'd accomplished in the two centuries that had passed. When the player encountered the Awakened in Geneforge, they advised him or her to use the Geneforge instead of destroying it.

Their leader, Ellhrah, died in the Drypeak Mountains, and leadership of the Awakened was passed on to Learned Pinner. In Geneforge 2, the Awakened, now led by Learned Pinner, realized they alone were never strong enough to defeat or protect themselves from the Shapers should the Shapers decide to destroy them. Instead, they created a huge flying army of Drakons to protect the mountains they called home, calling it the "Barrier of the Winds". In one ending of Geneforge 2, they enlisted the help of the player to create the barrier and be their envoy to the Shapers.

[edit] Place in the Geneforge universe

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The Awakenened essentially represent the "middle ground" of the alliances in both Geneforge 1 and 2. The Awakened respect the Shapers for their powers, but do not think they are deserving of worship. They abhor the idea encouraged by the Takers of slaughtering the Shapers, but refuse to adopt the Shaper-worshipping stance of the Obeyers. The Awakened could best be described as idealists--few among the Shapers would accept their ideas. The Awakened were not seen as a separate faction in Genefore 3, but certain Shapers and creations among the both the Shapers and the rebels interacted in ways that would have made the Awakened pleased.
