[edit] English manga

The English manga uses "Land of Fire" etc. and "Konohagakure" etc.

Also, the English manga uses macrons with Jonin, Chunin, but NOT with Choji, Hyuga, etc. WhisperToMe 21:01, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Yep. WhisperToMe 21:14, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

May I move Hyūga clan to Hyuga clan? This is because the English manga and anime both do not use macrons to refer to the Hyugas. WhisperToMe 21:24, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

By the way, the English manga does not tack on "no Sato" at the end of the village names. WhisperToMe 21:25, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Japanese spell names in Zatch Bell!

  • I was gonna just revert your change (leaving out the possibly made-up English names, of course), but you're a respectable editor and seem to know what you're talking about. So I'd like to know how come you think the Japanese spell names are the same as the English ones? They're written in kana in the manga. Just curious. Danny Lilithborne 01:28, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Naruto words: Japanese vs. English

Hi! You seem to be on top of what goes on in the Naruto articles. Is there a convention as to whether to use Japanese or English words? I believe that there whould be consistency throughtout the pages (and English is probably better, given that this is the English Wikipedia), but I'm not sure if there's been a discussion on this. I've seen conflict with the hokage numbering (Godaime v. Fifth), with the names of the country and the hidden villages (Konohagakure v. Hidden Leaf), with the justsu names (Kage bunshin v. Shadow Clone) and even with the spelling of the ninja ranks (jōnin v. jounin). So my questions to you are:

- Is there a convention in place? (even if it is different for, say, geographical names and for the jutsu) If so, what is it?
- If not, does this warrant an open discussion?
- Either way, what would be the appropriate place to include a word's alternate language counterpart?

I'm just asking so that I can help with consistency throughout the articles. Thanks! --Byakuren 16:22, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I guess the reason I care is because there's some amount of back-and-forth editing on those words... I'll stick to the convention you suggested from now on. Thx! -- Byakuren 16:41, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Yu-Gi-Oh GX manga (US)

What will happen if the manga (US verison) uses the Japanese original names?

Should we change it?

(The post was made by another user)

The thing about the GX manga is that it's a spinoff of the anime. The YGO anime series are spinoffs of the original manga. The reason why the manga names were chosen is because the manga is Takahashi's original work.

Anyway, the Portuguese-language YGO manga is going to use the dub names, so I guess the Portuguese Wikipedia will too. WhisperToMe 04:00, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 8-bit theatre

Hi, I noticed you had several posts on the 8 bit theatre page, so I figured I'd ask you this. DO you know if the site is experiencing problems? I haven't been able to view the comics for a week now, and I'm trying to figure out why. I have a feeling it has something to do with the comics being in png/gif, in the FAQ section Brian says that when the comics are shown in png, they can't be viewed by some people for some people. I don't understand however, as the comics should be in gif... hopefully you can help. Thanks. DoomsDay349 17:07, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for bugging you, I figured it out, I had images blocked from the site by accident. Thanks. DoomsDay349 17:35, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

VIZ uses:

  • Gin
  • Roguetown
  • Seven Warlords of the Sea

WhisperToMe 23:10, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

What's with the constant changing of One Piece terms from Japanese to English? Some like Going Merry to Merry Go, I can understand. But changing some like the Cipher Pol Devil Fruits to those English variants. Why? Those don't even have yet a Viz or 4Kids source to back them up.CalicoD.Sparrow 05:11, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

I also disprove of the constant changing from one to the other. Its got to the point where I no longer know which name to use. Your use of English dub names over Japanese names results in the incorrect naming of Gum Gum Jet Gattling gun (which is an upgrade of the Gum Gum gattling Gun, known in the 4Kids dub as 'Rapid fire') instead of Sumo Sumo Jet Gettling. This is nothing to do with useage by the fans... There is NO SOURCE for some of your changes even in the English dub/manga but there is in the orginal Japanese verison (yes, there IS an ORGINAL verison, despite what you've said in a recent edit and that is it!!!). As a reglaur editor of One Piece pages, other non-anime wikipedia pages and a fan of One Piece I don't disprove of your edits, but can you at least make it clear what the format of the terms you are using are on the Main One Piece page for the rest of us to follow, as I said, I'm lost now as to what words to use and I'm sure its causing more confusion amongst other editors. [edit] Bleach

In the meantime there is a similar thing - All English-language versions of Bleach (manga) use Soul Reaper, yet some editors there still want to use "Shinigami" WhisperToMe 21:26, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I'll participate in it. Is it at Talk:One Piece? WhisperToMe 22:42, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bottom line: Consistency

One cannot write a consistent encyclopedia based on a half-completed dub and the original source. As Angel pointed out quite aptly, there is no "Gum Gum Jet Gatling", only a Gomu Gomu Jet Gatling, and we cannot adapt the name of the english dub because WP:NOT a crystal ball and we'd just be making stuff up. Consistency in terminology should be our goal here. --tjstrf 18:38, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

P.S.: You really might want to archive the top half or so of your talk page. Not to be a busybody, but it's rather huge. --tjstrf 18:39, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

The thing is, you cannot be consistent and use the dub, because the dub does not fully exist. If the series were finished, the dub had caught up with it, and the dub were the established norm among fans you'd have a good point, but as is you're asking us to do the impossible: standardize to a something which only half exists rather than something which does fully exist. --tjstrf 18:49, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

No, I'm saying that I'd rather use the official romanizations by the author, or in cases where they are not available, Hepburn romanization. A second viable option would be the most popular version. The dubbed version of the name, as well as any particularly note-worthy varients, (e.g. Jyabura) would of course be listed alongside the chosen name. We would not need to be inconsistent at all.

This is a perfectly doable option, it can meet an equal or greater number of Manual of Style requirements as using the dub will, and most importantly it will stop the feuding over names. --tjstrf 19:10, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Talk:Roronoa Zoro

Well, it's generally following guidelines such as "No original research" or "Use English", even when "Use common names" conflicts somewhat. I even suggested a move against the Japanese manual of style because of the fact that in most English sources for the page involved, their form of romaji was not used. Unfortunately, that exception does not show up in this case, as in the more common dubbing of One Piece, his name is Zolo (the officially English licensed manga and anime), and, also, I said that {{Nihongo}} is perfect for situations like this, where the English name and then the Japanese name is given in one place, such that "Roronoa Zolo (ロロノア・ゾロ Roronoa Zoro?)" would be used in the article, much like on the articles I frequent we have something along the lines of Gougou Sentai Boukenger (轟轟戦隊ボウケンジャー Gōgō Sentai Bōkenjā?), where both spellings are also used. [edit] Whoa!

Hey Geg can you slow down a minute before you change all the Devil Fruits back! Its currently under discussion and its not wise to make so many changes until the discussion is over. I'm not asking you to stop, just not to jump in so soon and change everything, its gonna cause a row otherwise. Wait until the discussion is over and THEN you can change it. Angel Emfrbl 15:53, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Page moving

A user and his buddy moved "Seven Warlords of the Seas" to "Shichibukai" - It seems like a group of people are trying to undo all of the dub names in the articles. God, it's annoying! WhisperToMe 02:51, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I wish to crack down on them now, actually. In fact, I've told them that there is no consensus over how to enact the rule, so the issue is still up for dispute. WhisperToMe 04:38, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I hope you don't mind I add my bit here... But there are more people who want it kept the way it is then those who want as 'Seven warlords' (by FAR). Its best to leave it alone, since they will only argue it be changed back... All I want to see is these pages brought up to snuff, nothing else, names are the bottom of the list of things to do. I think we've wasted far too much time arguing over Japanese Vs English dub, so if its written now in Japanese I say leave it for a while, we have too much other stuff to do to worry about minor things like names. [edit] A Naruto workgroup

I was wondering if you would be willing to found a Naruto Workgroup under Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga. I think a focus group is needed so that all Naruto articles head in the right direction. To do that a small leadership committee would be needed to create a simple list of prioritized things to do. That group would then delegate tasks to different teams. I am willing to start doing this but would need to collaborate with editors who frequent the Naruto articles.
