GECKO Sri Lanka
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GECKO Sri Lanka is "an organisation, a charity, but above all a family", which seeks to "Give Essential Care and Key Opportunities whenever and wherever it is needed". Now an official registered charity, GECKO Sri Lanka was started by a group of students in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. The resulting tsunamis devastated the shores of among other countries, Sri Lanka. Despite a tsunami being classified as requiring short term aid, GECKO Sri Lanka recognises that the effects of such a natural disaster on a developing country like Sri Lanka results in deep-rooted problems. Through fundraising events and careful allocation of raised money, GECKO Sri Lanka aims to provide a form of long term aid to enable a better quality of life to those affected by the tsunami.
However it's limits are not only to Sri Lankans, they help with other incidents when they occur. One such example is the Charity's support with Indian earthquake which occurred soon after the tsunami.
Some examples of their work are setting up long term housing for the victims and building water tanks for the areas which lost theirs. They raise money by hosting events such as fashion shows and sports days.
[edit] Charity Status
