[edit] St. Patrick's day

Hi! how are you? You haven't been around much lately, but when you do get this, there is something that appeared on the main article for luton about St. patrick's day. It's good, but it needs discussion about whether we need it or where to place it, etc. I've put it on the talk page, so have a look and discuss. I hope your well, as i've been off due to the snow. I should be on a bit more the coming week, so whatever you need doing, i can do it. I'm starting a few new school articles, so if you don't get this before the end of half term, i should of done one or two articles for the education in luton bit. We may want to add this to the main article, schools in luton that is, under an education heading, but if this won't do anything for the good article status, then forget it. We will need to link it another way. Remember, talk to me on my talk page, as then you'll get my attention. Thanks a lot, Random articles 21:03, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

I've found this interesting link called Irish community in Britain and I reckon it's a good read. Before you read it though, I'll tell you now it doesn't cite it's references, so don't take it as gospel, but it does give this bit of the article a bit more credibility (even if it is a tiny amount). At least if you don't want the celebration bit, we should add this to the demographics bit. What do you think? Random articles 17:49, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hello?

Whenever you pick this up, you'll see that I've been busy with luton and relating articles. I've added Ashcroft High School to the list and also the town crest to the template. It took a bit of fiddling, but i borrowed some HTML off manchester and that sorted that out. I've closed the discussion on St. Patricks day and I've decided not to include it but add a demographics bit, all referenced up, instead.

I've been browsing many good articles for ideas to improve, and I've seen that a lot of them have a geography and geology bit. Now, I know a bit, but since I've done a lot, and where we are now is all up to your hard work, I'd though I'd query it with you first. It's a good idea, but I wouldn't know where to reference it.

I've found a good few articles that I could start and link back, so improving the link network to luton, getting more people in. I've also been busy doing a little reorganising of the article. I feel there is no flow to the article and it keeps jumping back and forth to different points, so I'm having a go at that too.

I hope your OK, and that you come back soon. I'm a bit stuck for what to do next. Reply to this as soon as you can.

Thanks a lot,

Morning! I'm up and ready to work. What would you like me to do? Random articles 11:00, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
Point them out to me please, and I'll start to reorganise the article. Random articles 12:46, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Luton

Right, I've come up with a plan of action. There are several things to do before I reckon the article is good article status (possibly featured - you never know):

  • Firstly, we need to reorganise the article. I think that history, followed by politics and demographics should come first. Then education, followed by economics, then transport connections, followed by twin towns, (crap towns), finished by see also and references.
  • We then need to start new sections. Geography and geology should come at the top, before history and after the opening para. Then start a new section called Culture (or something similar - see below). Also add a "see also" bit, linking to other relevant articles.
  • Dismantle the About Luton bit. Sorry, but I think it's too clumsy, and we should merge it with the rest of the article in the relevant places.
  • Culture(?) - this is a good bit, where we can combine all the info about the parks, festivals, local attractions, (crap towns) etc. (again see below (Daughter pages))
  • Daughter pages - these will become increasingly important. I reckon the main article can have a lot of info, but sometimes wanders off (example - history - great, but can wander). I reckon we should set up daughter pages like History of luton, or culture of Luton, or politics in luton etc, so we can expand on these subjects at great length, without cluttering up the main article.
  • Possibly something about the environment. Luton is an industrial town (was), but we don't want to give the impression that we don't care about the environment. There is loads of trees, parks, woods and the river lee to write about, giving a good impression of the town.
  • At some point, I will get a picture (a panorama) of Luton, which I will upload and stick on. this will be, I think, a great addition to the article, giving people a great insight to what luton looks like. (mabye when it's a bit drier, but I will get it).
  • References - I only noticed today that it said on points for improvement that our referencing was incorrectly formatted. I'm guessing this will need to be done at some point, but it looks overly boring to me. I'm not saying you should do it, but there must be something like a bot that can do it for us.

I can see that there are a lot of points, containing a lot of work, but this I think will improve the article no end. I have no problem working on them for the next few days, but I'm back at school next monday, and I shall disappear into a shadow of my current self on Wikipedia. So if we are to do this, we need to start now.

I hope this is OK :)

Random articles 14:06, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Right, good, we're getting it together now...

  • Geography - I shall have a look around, have a go. I reckon there won't be much to say, but it's important nonetheless. I'll mention the chilterns (the gap we're in, important for transport, chalky/clay etc), Lat/Long, warden hills, (river lee - see below)
  • Culture (I don't like that name - can you think of anything better?) this is basically combining a lot of loose bits of article eg carnival, local attractions, etc and puuting them in a sensible order. We can add as we go along, I'm guessing. mabye combining luton town football, cricket etc (sport) would go down here as well
  • about luton - thank goodness you hate it too. we need to start merging these bits into other parts.
  • Politics - to answer your question, Yes, other good articles and featured articles have daughter pages on politics. mainly because it's a long and not highly interesting to have on the main article :). we can keep what we've got already as this is great (short and to the point), but expand on this daughter page about the town hall, MP's councillors etc. from what I've seen, anything to do with a council goes here.
  • History - this is something I know your interested in and more than happy to let you do it (being useless at history at school). i suggest we create the daughter page, then transfer a lot onto this, and keep the main article short and sweet. i suggest looking through articles such as bristol and Manchester (both GA)
  • Environment - mabye combine this with geography? I'm not saying we should sell the town for a great place, as there are still some grotty establishments across the town, but we do need to mention the abundance of nature in the town.
  • Photos - Great. Upload them into the wikmedia section at this link Wikimedia - Luton, and then other people can get at them. I will have that panorama done soon. (check out sheffield for a good one - FA)
  • References - Uh... well i knew this would have to be done. i don't want to do this as much as you don't (if that makes sense?!) but your right. Split them up and both do them.

I'll try my best to be around next week, but i can't promise anything too concrete. I'll start to set up these pages if your happy with them, then i shall start to transfer and aquire new information, and rewrite what needs to be done.

I've check out MK. It looks good, but we can do better!

OK?

Thanks, Random articles 15:41, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Out of interest, would you like me to start up the daughter pages now, or wait and do something else? Random articles 15:55, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
I've set up a page on politics, Politics in Luton where you can add your thing that you were going to do on the council. I have also amended the redirect and got a general order. Anything else you know and want to add/change, go right ahead. thanks a lot, Random articles 19:23, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bad news

I'm afraid that after careful consideration (i.e. my parents told me), i'm going to have to take a wikibreak from next monday onwards until at least May, when my exams are. I will appear sporadically, depending on when I get the time to edit, but I will disappear from monday onwards, to do revision (yeah, right...). However, i've still got till sunday to help, so i will get that panorama done (i hope), i will try to do the daughter pages, set up the culture bit and start on the references.

i will put up a proper wikinotice from today, but i will be around till sunday (i hope)

Sorry about that, Random articles 11:37, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

However, i do not leave with bad news only. i'm currently looking for links with information for the pages. I will leave them on the talk page, eg Talk:Culture in Luton‎ and there will be links, hints and advice to help you along. don;t worry, I'm trying to ease the blow. :)

[edit] This is Important!

OK, well i've done loads and this might be my last message for some time. I've set up daughter articles on all the relevant aspects in the article and a full list is below. I hope your happy with what i've done, and aware of what lies ahead of you, as it is one hell of a task.

What i have done is this. I have set up the daughter articles, and started most of them off, however, a lot of information, and i mean a lot, needs to be added. On most of them, i have done a lot of the hard work of finding sources by posting them on the talk page. the only one i haven't done this for is transport. I'm much too tired to do it now, mabye tomorrow. I know unfortunately, that prose isn't your thing, but i will try and check up occasionally and help sort a few things out, but no promises though, so don't hold me to it. I have moved information off the main article into the daughter article for most things, but you will have to cut down on the transport bit in the main article, make it flow better and move some of the random facts into the daughter article.

What you really will have to do though urgently is completely re-write the culture bit on the main article. It is dreadful (all my fault by the way) and i'm ashamed of it to be honest. i have left as much info as i can find for the culture daughter article, but there is bound to be more.

Economy, i'm quite proud of. It does need referencing, but the prose is good. In the daughter article, i've found loads of info, so you shouldn't be stuck there and there probably is photos floating around somewhere that you can use (again see below)

History - I've left that honour to you to set up that page as i know that's what your interested in. It shouldn't be too hard, as i've got loads of info already, you just need to supplement it with more general history. Have fun on that!

I've changed a few names of daughter articles so that they tie in with the rest of the articles, and i suggest that you change the formatting on the template to have;

  • About Luton - with all the daughter pages linked
  • Wards - stays the same, just moves down

Scrap amenities as they are contained in culture, and education is on the eductaion in luton bit so leave that out too.

Talking about education, sorry, but production on the secondary school articles is going to slow to a stop. Mabye have a go yourself, but don't fret, they aren't vital to the overall project yet.

One thing I am mightly sorry about is the referencing. I tried, but don't understand what i'm supposed to do, so failed. if i were you, i would leave it right to the end, but try and use the correct referencing when writing new articles, so you (mabye me) won't have to go over it again.

Geography and geology - i've done some, but not a lot. If there's more, then add it, but i have addedd a citation tag to a fact whcih i've always known, but cant prove. you'll see it on the article. one thing you may want to add is a climate bit. i currently don't have the time to do it, but mabye, this would be a good thing to add.

Environmental wise, i suggest merging bits into other parts of the project that are relevant. You were right when you said that NPOV may be violated if we hark on about the environment, but the parks and woodland bit in culture daughter article would be a good place to start to add bits about the environment.

Politics, something i don't like to broach on as general chat :), but the article is set up, and just needs padding out with wahat you wanted to do for the council and the MP's, and it also needs referencing up, but that's not too hard (I think!)

The places in Luton bit seems a bit pointless to me, as we have it at the bottom on the template, so i suggest move it across to the actual list and reformat that to accommodate the list on the main article, then move the main link to somewhere relevant (I dunno, i'm sure you'll know!)

What else? Ah yes, photos. Right, I WILL have that panorama done by some time in the not to distant future, but camera and weather problems have hampered my efforts so far. Other photos, you will have to take yourself, and remember to upload them onto the wikimedia bit for luton. this means that others can use them too, and this means that visitor traffic may go up. I know your not happy with a few, but the ones in the articles at the moment are good, so they probably don't need changing too much.

The layout in the luton main page is fine, so i don't think you need to change it unless something drastic happens. You will notice that on the daughter articles start with something like This article is based around whatever in Luton. This is a good thing to start off with on a new page, so i'd stick with it.

Is this enough? Or do you want more advice? :)

All I can say from here is the best of luck (coz you'll need it!), and that I hope that you won't hate me too much for leaving you such a mammoth task :P Oh and that i hope I'll see you around every once in a while!

Thanks a lot,

Random articles 21:30, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

PS: You may want to start archiving your talk page. It's Reeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaalllllllyyyyy long!

OK, final message (I think). I've added some links to the transport in luton on the talk page. On nearly every article, I've added links to help on the talk page. The only one I haven't is politics, but you'll find everything on the luton.gov site for that. History is all yours, as I've said before and I'm putting below all the pages I've set up and readied for you:

Again, I'm sorry I can't help, but exams are to take precedence over wiki at the moment. You will see me occasionally, in the background, adding a picture or correcting mistakes, etc, but I'm now officially on a wikibreak (if I can manage!)

Well, good luck, and I hope you will do a fantastic job. Use my tips if you want, but completely disregard them as well. Whatever takes your fancy :)

All the best, (and try not to hate me for leaving you with this huge job!)

[edit] Hello

Hi! Just popping in to have a look. not much has happened, but i'm not fussed. i see that a wikiproject has been set up, and i've joined, not being an active member at the moment. my revision is going fine and my first exam, art, is next week! (still haven't done enough to get a decent grade!) i don't know exactly when i will be back, but certainly in May as i said on my wikibreak.

i've found some stuf that may interest you. on BBC news, an article [1] has some stuff about luton which is quite good and i'm sure that the company Boddingtons has it's HQ or something important in luton. mabye research that? the panorama i promosed would of been on this week but the weather has taken a turn for the worse and you may still have to wait for it a bit longer.

keep talking to me if you like, but my MSN is still messed up, so no go there. I'll see you around then. Keep going!

Nice additions! You did a good job "wikifying" Luton, Iowa! Chiefsfan364 (talk) 15:57, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

I almost forgot, Luton in Iowa is a very small town, and there is not much more that can be added on. Chiefsfan364 (talk) 17:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

I can try to maybe upload a couple pictures though. Now to just get hold of a digital camera... Chiefsfan364 (talk) 00:55, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

There. My own personal helicopter took this for me. :) Its a little high up, but what do you think? Chiefsfan364 (talk) 01:19, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Milton Keynes article assessment

If you have time, would you add some notes at talk:Milton Keynes to suggest what needs to be done to reach A class, please? --Concrete Cowboy 13:25, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Automated suggestions for GA article added to MK talk page.

Thanks - A lot to do, I see!
I think that I've seen these before when I put up History of Milton Keynes for peer review, changed as far as I could tell but didn't know how to submit for checking again. Is the javascript tester generally available? If so, could you tell me where to find it? If not, then out of curiousity could you spare the time to run it against History of MK to see how close I got, please? (I was trying hard to reach GA for the 40th birthday on 15 Jan 2007 - that's passed now though there will be events all through the year.) --Concrete Cowboy 00:09, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
thanks - happy to do it myself, if I understood the instructions? What's my "monobook" and how do I add the script to it? --Concrete Cowboy 13:05, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Sorry if I'm being dense, but I've done as suggested (and gone back to user talk:AndyZ to be sure I have the orginal. I've even installed firefox in case it is an IE funny. But no sign of an extra tab [I'm expecting to find it beside
