The Gazet van Antwerpen (Antwerp Gazette, popularly named De Frut, "sour head cheese") is a Belgian newspaper, circulated foremostly in the city of Antwerp and Flanders, and published by Concentra.

[edit] History

The first edition of the Gazet van Antwerpen appeared on November 3, 1891. Its editor was then Jan Baptist Napolitaan Van Os, a Catholic. Shortly thereafter the company NV De Vlijt would takeover the newspaper. In a short time the paper saw its circulation soar to 25,000 in 1893 and 40,000 in 1896. Around the First World War, the paper's circulation was just short of 100,000, but it won't be published during the First, nor the Second World War.

In 1973, the Gazet van Antwerpen would reach its peak circulation of around 210,000. Since then, under competition also from the radio and television media, the paper will never reach that peak again. The NV De Vlijt will merge into the Regionale Uitgeversgroep with Concentra Holding in 1996, the publisher of Het Belang van Limburg. Concentra itself was a listed company on the Euronext Brussels until 2004.
