   ==HERstory==
 Gaylord was named for a young Indian maiden that came to live in the area around the present day town. Legend has it that locals were about to name the town Mountville and the lake on which it resides Mud. But that fateful yet wretchedly hot summer, the lake was extremely low. Gaylord, the Indian maiden, was often seen by the lake washing herself.

 Whence upon the mayor of would-be town heard of this juicy tidbit of gossip, proceeded down to the lake shore one early summer morn. Chances were best to see the maiden in her maker's glory, so the mayor stumbled upon the beauty and when he did, both were taken aback, but the flustered mayor asked how the lake was. To this the fair Indian maiden, fluid in English as well as humor replied back, "It's a tit-low" So the mayor decided then and there that the town be named after this maiden and the lake after that chance encounter.
 But the mayor's grasp of a woman's anatomy was as bad as his penmanship, so the lake name was submitted as Titlow Lake. This information was passed down by stone tablets uncovered in caves during the early 2010s on one of the lake's islands. Or so the story is told!
